Why do random strangers smile at me?

I've noticed people smile at me and sometimes point. I also sometimes smile and I don't really know why.

I don't know why people would point, that seems kind of rude. I usually smile at people I pass by when I walk to be polite. I think its a natural reaction to smile in response to a person who is also smiling.
