How do you respond if a guy says what's up?

OK I know this is gonna sound really lame, but I just need to know how. See there's this guy in my lunch that I really like.(He likes me too. Because I can tell by the way he acts around me. And no he doesn't have a girlfriend.) And I just want to know how to strike up a conversation with him without just saying hi and then bye. Or making the conversation boring. I also want to know how I can just casually ask him out.

When a guys says 'what's up' he's generally just saying hello. :)

Most guys like direct. So try that. You want to ask him out, just go up to him, say 'Hey, what's up.' Wait, then dive right in. "Was thinking you and I should go hang out sometime, what do you say?' or something like that. Edit to taste and have fun!
