Guys- what does it mean if you become suddenly protective of a girl?

A guy I know has suddenly started being much more protective than he has in the past- he says he worries about me walking to night class, has started defending me if people jokingly insult me, and is just generally protective. We've recently become closer friends, could it just be that's how he is with his friends? Or does he maybe have deeper feelings for me?

Wow, a wide range of opinions- thanks everyone! And, just to clarify, I have other close guy friends, so I'm used to a little protectiveness, it's just odd that it sort of happened all of a sudden.

He is definitely developing something! He likes you. He has deeper feelings but I cannot say if they are deeper friend feelings or deeper something else feelings. Might be only close friendship, might be more. But I think it is partly also your decision to make.

im like that with my female friends like walking at night I walk with them I have a gun so I'm from a police family and I'm in police training to become a police officer so I KNOW what can happen to girls that walking alone at night :/

I would say he probably is getting non-friend feelings for you. But I have had close guy friends who were very protective of me. Whenever we hung out there was 4 of them and I was the only girl. Either way it is sweet!

u wouldn't be asking this if you didn't like him? if you like him ull read it as he's becoming protective. its manly nature to do that whether you like it or not. take it for what its worth and if you don't like it tell him to back off.
