Slavery. Do think African American slaves had it good compared to slaves elsewhere in the world & throughout history?

Well statistically its a provable fact that they were better off in North America then anywhere else. I mean for starters they were not emasculated like in the middle east (the reason why we have a population of blacks in our country but no middle eastern country does. Also because we allowed them to marry and have kids and they couldn't do that in the middle east).

Also, statistically their was only a few year gap between life spans of slaves to slave owners in the west (about four years) while in other countries that was over 15 year difference i. e. harder more brutal life.

On top of that blacks actually had some rights in the west (not many, and this of course does not mean that slavery was acceptable but rather that if given these two terrible options, the least terrible one would be to be a slave in the west), which again is how they married, how they could get free, it was illegal to beat a pregnant slave etc. Not exactly great but a far cry better then every other nation at the time (in central and south America they would be butchered, tortured and killed, native americans did much the same. So did African slavers (if they were not just selling them) etc. etc.).

I don't know enough to say. I went to the slavery museum in new orleans and it explained the fate of many of the slaves there. That was quite damn awful... to die quickly of diseases, killed by reptiles, and sear in the heat while working all day.

but I cannot compare that to the Muslim slave trade, Barbary states Muslim slavery (often taking European white women), or other nations. that's a tough nut to compare...

why people find it "good" to enslave and misuse others, and justify it as "good", would be a better question to ponder...

As I'm sure you know, there are many slaves today... human trafficking is an intense business... white, black, latino, philipino, etc.. They are right under your nose too...

Muslims castrated their slaves which is why there are no descendants of African slaves in muslim countries despite muslims having the most African slaves.

About middling. They didn't have some of the appalling experiences inflicted upon slaves by the Arab slave trade in East Africa, and the Indian Ocean, but they also generally didn't have it particularly good, either.

I can think of both better and worse places to be a slave than in the United States, when slavery was legal.

Slavery wasn't legal or widely practised in most of Europe, in the modern period, although you did have serfdom, where the peasants were tied to the land, had to give a certain number of workdays to the landowner etc, which wasn't entirely different.

Some slaves in the Ancient World, however, had it comparatively better. Their closest analogies would be house slaves in the US. Some slaves in the Ancient World became quite powerful people in their own right, though, more than would have been possible for slaves in the US.

@hellionthesagereborn Europes trick because throughout history there was wide variety of slavery with slave having rights and no rights. Then there's the matter of servitude or slavery. Rome was particularly hard on slaves. Slaves were worked to death in quarries, mines, gallies, prositutes, construction sites, as gladiators etc and were generally treated very cheaply whereas African American slaves were treated like cattle

Oh I know, and they also ended it earlier too (environmental factors were to blame in my opinion. Wide spread agriculture was hard in Europe early on due to a combination of mountainous terrain and woodlands which made using non iron plows (the most common for most of history) impossible to get through the rocky soil and thick roots. After that you really didn't have the culture built up for slavery on any kind of wide scale unlike most other regions in the world).

Serfdom and feudalism where in my opinion more closely related to indentured servitude then slavery (close to it but not quite as restrictive and brutal). I'd agree with the house slaves one, that was the best position you could be as a slave (hell even as a free man that was usually better then free out in the fields).

Roman slaves where not frequently thrown into the gladiatorial pit, that was usually criminals or slaves from wars (who were pretty much going to be killed anyway). They actually didn't like using lethal combat in the arena as much as people think they did because getting a new slave was expensive and training a new slave to fight in the arena was even more expensive so they generally (but not always) tried to avoid lethal combat with slaves (unless they where captured in war or criminals (or political dissidents or what have you)).

@hellionthesagereborn serfdom depending on the region was very close to slavery, often a serf could never leave where he lived and was bound in service forcibly to a noble. Russian serfdom was probably the hardest.
Well Rome valued educated and skilled slaves as well as house slaves which was a good life but the majority of roman slaves did hard back breaking labor and weren't valued because how cheap and easy to acquire. A good example is that when caesar conquered gaul its said that he killed a third of the hauls and enslaved another third, that's massive amount of slaves. 1in3 people in the Roman empire were said to be slaves.

As for rome, yes they did have a lot of slaves but most of that happened later as the empire began to collapse and they started devaluing their currency (not unlike what we are doing) and going into debt (not unlike what we are doing) and raising taxes (not unlike what we are doing) to the point were many people in order to escape debt sold themselves into slavery. It got so bad that they actually had to make it illegal to become a slave to escape debt. In fact some have argued this is how the feudal system got it start as more and more people became destitute and dependent on a powerful land owner to help support them.

White Christians from Europe and the Americas are the ones that pushed to end slavery around the world in a huge struggle that lasted hundreds of years. The last to free slaves were the Black nations in Africa in the 1960s. Surprised that neither you, nor anyone else, has mentioned that, while up to 28M of the estimated 140M victims of the Islamic Slave Trade were Africans, the overwhelming majority of those victims, over 100M, were actually White Europeans. Mostly Slavs, from Central Europe, who're the whole reason that we call them 'Slaves' and refer to it as 'Slavery' today (though the Arabs referred to them, and all Europeans by extension, as 'Saqaliba', which they also used as a disparaging racial slur, comparable to 'Negro'). I don't know the actual conditions of slaves of thousands years ago, but black slaves in America were treated absolutely horrible, abused, humiliated, both men and women raped, children used as bait for alligators. Black people had it extremely bad in the Americas as slaves.

Muslim merchants were heavily involved in the African human trafficking trade, but very few Muslims actually OWNED African slaves during the time period you’re talking about. Almost every planter in the South owned African-American slaves, and a lot of middle class Southerners did too.

Lol jesus get educated. From 1565-1865 the American colonies and later United states imported very few slaves while the Muslim African slave trade lasted from the 9th century- 1960s, is still going and predates islam.
Saying few muslims owned African slaves is silly and of course every slave plantation owner owned but that doesn't mean every white farmer owned slaves ie Abraham Lincoln's father didn't own slaves. There were plenty of plantations all over north Africa, the middle east and asia minor. Hell there were slave revolts from time to time one involving 500,000 African slaves.
