Yep, this has been the case for decades. In fact it started in the fifties and has finally reached its climax now, hence the massive culture war thats happening. Orwell knew the socialists well, knew that they would manipulate words and manipulate facts and information to slowly destroy any connection the populace had with the past, with their culture and with their values so that the socialists could reshape them into what the party wanted people to be. This is why people are convinced that the soviet union won the cold war, because they have poisoned our well and we are now essentially dying from it.

No. Statues are always taken down and replaced, that is just how history works. New things happen and become more relevant than the old or represent the current people more than the old ones did. You dont see a bunch of Roman statues in the UK for example. You see things relevant to their culture and their values.

What Orwell was writing about was not the passage of time changing out old relics but politics re-writing old history.. You know.. like Republicans are doing.
