to like someone requires more than just a phrase or a bunch of words, it requires actions over a period of time. if he shows you through actions he likes you than you can assume he does.

but other than that being called pretty is just a compliment take it for what its worth.

Not necessarily. If he just said "pretty" then I doubt it. If he said "beautiful," it's entirely possible.

i only tell a girl she is pretty if I like her.

unless when a girl told me I'm hot or handsome when I'm drunk, I usually just say she is pretty back.
