Because in the past if you were tall you were looked up to as a person who could help, lead, and protect people (especially the smaller ones). I know some people tell me they can't see me doing certain adult things since I look like I'm 12. But if I were to point out to them that saying such things isn't polite, they'd get mad at me for it (not sure why). I don't say anything to people who are taller and/or bigger than me though. But that's because I know it's wrong-where it's obvious other people don't. But I would hope a very tall person (6-8 ft) would be more polite to me.

Part of it is a misconception that short=weak, which is not only untrue but it's an outdated form of thinking because we no longer battle with swords and clubs.
