Yes. Many people of European descent, colonialism apologists, and white supremacists are obviously going to say no. But do you think it's a coincidence that the scientific and industrial revolution only happens post global colonialism after the centuries of appropriation of other people's natural resources and free labor. You had Florence/Italy who was "wealthy" due to the trade routes established by the crusades, which ironically was failed colonialism but around the time Prince Henry kicked off the global European colonialism craze, most of Europe was distantly related families and Germanic descent kingdoms ransacking each other and the occasional Papal coup, nothing "first world" about it. White people for whatever reason like to sanitize and revise their history. And don't be mistaken the colonialism has never stopped, it just took on a new form of neocolonialism. Instead of having an occupying force come in with guns, white people just have their militaries and intelligence agencies (CIA, MI6, DGSE, SIRP) extrajudicially assassinate people, depose them, collaborate against them, coup them, do international espionage against them like they did with Patrice Lumumba, Amilcar Cabral, Kwame Nkrumah, Jacobi Arbenz, Thomas Sankara, Lula, Evo Morales, Gaddafi and the list literally goes on and on. And why you might ask? To steal and exploit these developing regions arable land and natural resources. Because in the sick irony of white people believing immigrants are leeches, the Western World is the greatest and most efficient leech of all time. The entire Western way of life would not exist if this system of eternal robbing and pillaging of poorer regions didn't exist.

And if they can't over throw or kill you themselves, they will do regime change, proxy wars, they will fund terrorists and rebel gangs to kill you, they will practice predatory financialist policy, like loading you up with debt from the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank and when you default, they rape your entire economic system (they even do it to themselves like in Greece). Did you know France forces 14 former colonies of itself to put half of their treasury in French reserves which equates to a colonial tax of 500 billion a year in French pockets for no reason other than they used to colonize these African countries? Did you also know France made Haiti pay them reparations for the Haitians rebelling against them and winning their freedom? How fucking sick and psycho do you have to be to do that? Why do you think France was still printing African currency as of the last decade?

No. It has more to do with the ramping up of industry and education. The west who had a head start will naturally maintain a lead unless the rest of the world can improve at a significantly quicker rate. Also 10% increase of 10000 is numerically a lot bigger than a 10% increase in 100 so catching up is not necessarily an easy feat.

There was still factories producing goods, still workers harvesting resources, still officials doing bureaucracy. The recovery was not about if, it was about how soon. Now, if I were to take your words at face value, it takes far less money to repair an already functional and self sustaining economy than it does to rebuild everything from "scratch".

Just London rebuilding its sewer system from scratch has been coined as one of the biggest and most expensive construction projects in human history and that is just one city. Now.. Imagine trying to rebuild a modern city with infrastructure, factories and everything else a country needs to be productive except this is not Germany or France but an area that is over 30 times larger than those two combined. 900 billion dollars does not get you very far.

@Bananaman177 Secondly, yes Africa was indeed dominating most of human history along with China. Egypt and its pyramids is famous for a reason not to mention that the richest man in human history was an African.

As for why Africa is relatively undeveloped? Most of Africa's land is not suitable for human settlements. Building cities in deserts, barren plains or jungles is not realistic without the support of either modern technologies or resources imported from a large empire.

This is why Egypt is so special and also why there was a very real limit to how large Egypt could comfortably expand.

Furthermore as for why Europeans could catch up and surpass African countries even though they had a head start? Because every country had reached more or less an equilibrium in development. The modern concept of exponential growth is not representative of human development in our history. It is an anomaly, it is unnatural and it can't continue forever either.

As such anyone who first reached a major breakthrough would gain a massive advantage over the rest of the world. It happened to be Europeans and the rest is history. If Africa invented the industrial revolution they would be the dominant force.

Due to the rise of communism in Russia, many European nations and even America through loans supported unstable Weimar Germany (until Black Monday) when they were struggling after WWI due to war reparations to act as a countering power to the rise of communism in Russia. That eventually lead to Nazism which was horrible, so we temporarily allied with Russia to shut that shit show down. Then Russia got crazy paranoid that we were going to nuke them from space with German rocket scientists. So the entire space race/cold war occurred. Dictators tend to be paranoid… That was bad for the world. After the fall of communism in Russia they haven’t been horrible even though we have had mixed relations… As far as development, China is just a lie all over the map. They don’t even allow audits, because it’s all a fraud. All numbers are state secrets...
