Is handsomeness subjective or do some people see themselves as more attractive than they really are?

but I personally would not have rated this guy above average in looks.

Degrees of handsomeness and beauty are subjective.
Objective beauty is also a thing. But any less than that is very subjective indeed.

People see themselves as more attractive than they are do to it being subjective. Obviously it is subjective. That is why people have different preferences.

It is subjective but there is a social standard idea of looks that is what is commonly thought of as handsome
