Technology may advance a lot, to the point of being able to travel across solar systems; but as long as there is poverty and suffering somewhere, we will not advance as a society.

Precisely. It's bad enough that or planet is suffering the consequences of our unwillingness to be better, but it would be worse, way worse, if we do the same on other planets or even infect other civilizations with them.
