What is the true definition of what people often refer to as a Mamma's Boy?

I mean there is no 'true' definition, but I guess it's someone who has been spoiled and doted on his whole life, even well into his adult years. She's done all or almost all his cooking, laundry, etc., and he may even be under her thumb, controlling him or influencing him in adulthood, too much.

But the only thing that really matters (other than a potential absence of life skills) is if he always chooses, supports, and defends, his mother, over his female partners. That means that no matter what the mother does, says, or thinks, no matter how potentially bad her behaviour or control over her son might be sometimes, the son will refuse to recognize this, and even worse, not support his girlfriend or wife, when a dispute or difference of opinion comes up.

If the 'mamma's boy' just really loves and appreciates and respects his mother, then that's a good sign that he's capable of feeling those things towards women. (They are more than just sexual objects and conquests to him.)
But if the mother is overbearing, and won't allow the adult son to grow up and live his own life, make his own decisions, and have who he wants in his life, then yes, this is a major problem. I wouldn't be with a man like this. Or a man who puts you in opposition to his mother. That is really nasty and deflecting the responsibility off of himself. It's his job to moderate and mediate.

- Can't make any adult decision without asking his momma even when he should know better than her what the best choice is./Would make life changing decisions only asking for his mom's opinion instead of asking his wife whom he lives with.
-Would tell big life events first to his mom before his wife whom he lives with.

A complain I've heard from women married to a mamma's boy is him constantly comparing his wife's action to his mom's, always coming up with a "That's not how my mom does it" when she cooks or does the laundry or clean or whatever he could've seen his mom do while growing up.
They bring you down with constant remarks making you feel like you're never good enough of a woman because no one can compare to his oh so perfect mom.

A mamma's boy is a guy who is led by his mom. He cannot make his own decisions, he has to consult with her on everything. He is emotionally tied to her like a child is to a mom so if this guy got into a relationship with a woman or even married, he would always listen to his mom over himself or his woman. So his mom is basically the god of his life. I guess he's just another version of a "white knight" except he's focused on thinking his mom is always right & knows best instead of every random woman.

This mamma's boy lacks his own identity. Lacks respect for himself. Lacks confidence. Is probably afraid of being responsible for things that go wrong. By following his mom he can mentally shift blame for anything that goes wrong to her but he might not be conscious of this. A man is expected to be responsible for the things he does. A mama's boy is trying to avoid responsibility by following a leader (his mom). He'll also be afraid of not living near her or not spending huge amounts of time with her. He'll neglect his woman/family in favor of his mom. This is unnatural.

As with all gender-specific words, it depends on who's using it.

Some stupidly use it to refer to an otherwise normal guy who just so happens to have an overbearing mother.. as if they have any control over their parents.

If you were to put a gun to my head and ask me, I'd say a momma's boy is a man with an overbearing mother who luxuriates in the doting as opposed to simply tolerating it. He probably only wants a woman who reminds him of his mother and, when making major decisions, may go to her for direction as opposed to simply counsel.

A guy with no job at age 41, lives off of mom and tries getting money off of her, for example, My Dad was like age 41 when a part of Clairton Steel Mill shut down on Sept 29, 1982, well we lived on hid extended benefits but he didn't want to take another job
me and my sister were young teenagers 14 and 15, finally, when I got into High School I took a temporary Summer job that paid $3.35 an hour, Yes life was a battle for sure

I'm not sure you'd call me a Momma's boy. Throughout my adult life, Mom has helped me with certain things, money when I needed it during my study years in college. She has let me live my life as I see fit, although she hasn't always approved, she never said so. In her later years, she has been dependent on my brother and me to deal with her finances, medical needs, shopping, and such. If anyone is a Momma's boy it would be my brother. But they have always been close.

If a guy can't make decisions for himself and his mom heavily influences them, then he's a mamas boy in my eyes. Same goes for if he's always at her house, especially for dinner

I would say it's a man who is dependent on his mother. Someone who is unable to connect with other women or being in a relationship because of her. A man who didn't grow up, so he acts like a kid.

From my standpoint, they love their mother a lot and talk to them a lot. I'm not one since I don't love my mother much and haven't talked to her in over 20 years.
