Looks and also maybe how I say things less than what I say. I've learned the hard way to make even the driest subjects interesting to laymen, and that had more to do with how I said things than what I said.

With looks, I don't mean it in the sense like I'm a hunk. Yet I have learned how to carry myself and present myself in a way that seems to get at least some people very eager to listen to what I have to say.

I kind of had to learn this the hard way since, aside from having had to make speeches and do presentations regularly for my job, I also taught university for some time. Especially when I was teaching at uni, I saw my job as not teaching the subject so much as making it interesting to the students so that they can learn the bulk of it on their own. So I became very focused on improving the way I spoke, the way I carried myself, in ways that got their undivided attention.

As far as what I was saying, it was the same kind of dry material every other CS professor was teaching. It's not very interesting on its own unless someone is extremely enthusiastic about the subject. So the goal as I saw it to get my students to excel was more about presentation: how things are said, how we present ourselves, our body language, expressiveness, our tone of voice, etc, to get people interested.

Honestly, early in my career people listened to me less because I’m pretty. Once they got to know me and found out I’m actually a smart girl, they pay attention to my words more.

People will listen more if you are pretty (i am not) or have a good body (I do) but in the end, they will judge you on who you are.

I just use big words and trap people’s attention because I sound smart (which I am). Most of the time, it’s not because of my looks unless the conversation topic specifically relates to my looks. Actually, people most often don’t take me seriously because of my looks.

Sorry, I read some other replies and I wanted to make it clear that I am able-bodies and in my opinion, I look fine. Im just a blond girl who likes to wear dresses and looks after kids a lot. I also bring a teddy bear out with me in public sometimes (because why not?) .
