@exitseven They do choose, and yes it's a horrible situation. But I am not the moral arbiter for all of humanity. Nor is anyone else, their body their choice, why pay for incarceration, courts and all of that over a personal choice? Instead if and or when they hit bottom, let them seek help... incarceration is just an expensive way to stop people who don't want to stop. Waste of state resources...

@exitseven Criminal activity is a result of untreated drug use. In places where it is legal you don't see it. Look at the Netherlands, low crime rate and legal drugs.

So the government is going to give people free dope? It is just shifting the expense onto taxpayers along with medical care , narcan etc. Young people will get addicted in record numbers and once they get addicted only a minority end up giving it up. Yes, having a medical infrastructure will minimize ODs but the taxpayers still have to pay for it. It is irresponsible to do this.

@exitseven No. I'm saying that the current system is quite expensive. www.americanprogress.org/.../ and treating simply makes more sense from a tax payer perspective. I believe that people can and do change, that once a junkie not always a junkie. If there was no hope to cure them, then we still are going about it in the most expensive way possible. The war on drugs was a big waste of funds and we must look at it from a new set of eyes or we'll just continue spinning our wheels.

Oregon didn’t legalize all drugs, they decriminalized them. Huge difference

If we truly belive in freedom, control over your own body is the most important freedom.
Alcohol and tobacco are horrors compared to any other drug. They kill and ruin more lived than anything. But, we get over it and allow people to do it.
2 years ago, I got drunk every weekend. I was lucky and eventually lost the desire to drink. I never did any other drug, but if I had kept up, I would be no better off than a drug addict.10 Reply
+1 yI know that by making all drugs legal; it means that the State can tax them, an make a killing off of their sales. The problem is; that too many people will be affected by this in a bad way, as their addiction will be fed more, and more will over dose, as it will be easier to find their drugs of choice. People will be high more often, and in a lot of cases, unable to work, because of their high.
It may bring down drug related crime, since it is now easier to acquire your drugs. Over all, it may cause serious issues when you wish to have children. But it will be good at making less drug crimes. We now need to educate all about the drugs, and their affects on ones body, so people will not consume them without have full disclosure of what they are about to put their body through, listing all properties, implications, and side effects.00 Reply
+1 yWell, it would put the cartels out of business. And while I am all for doing what you want and being able to put whatever you want into your own body and stuff, some of this stuff is evil. Meth, Fentanyl, or the combo resulting is super-meth are pretty lethal. So while I am fine with most of it, some of it can be legit be classified as poison. So I am a little torn. But, putting the cartels out of business and providing people safe versions of their drug of choice is appealing to me. It's a difficult question.
00 ReplyDrugs shouldn't be criminalised, the actions people take on drugs should be criminalised. If someone smokes a joint, sniffs some coke etc and knows the consequences and doesn't hurt anyone else then they are not criminals. The minute there actions affect someone else negatively then that is when it becomes criminal.

+1 ySeems like the best solution to win the "war on drugs".
Portugal, decrimilised all possesion of drugs, and instead of punishing the consumer/addict they offer help and rehab. They now got the lowest amount of drug addicts in all of Europe by far.
Drug dealers are still punished and face justice in court.01 Reply- +1 y
Glad someone pointed this out.
+1 yIt would be the most effective means of getting rid of them completely. Unlimited availability, without legal consequence and unlimited information on how destructive they can be when misused, will eliminate the cool factor, wow factor, forbidden fruit factor, and mystique involved in experimentation and need to learn the hard way.
Doing recreational or unnecessary prescription drugs, will be as cool and appealing as picking up a dog turd and putting it in your mouth.00 Reply
+1 yAll for drug legalization! Best way to fight drug proliferation is to make it legal and TAX the SH! T out of it! Then watch crime and overdoses DROP through the floor.

That wouldn't work, black market would just offer lower prices.

@Crazybeeguy true
+1 yProbably not a great idea. I am all for the legalization of certain drugs, but legalizing all drugs will just create a massive increases of deaths and harm/addiction.

+1 ymeth heroin crack PCP should always be illegal. those drugs are a straight up gateway to hell. LSD shrooms and weed in okay with. coke I always felt was a decent not too addicting drug. haven't done it in over 10 years but it never made me want to spend an arm and leg to get and stay high. It was kind of like alcohol to me. once you wake up the next morning you don't crave it or anything.
so yeah Coke I'm fine with being legal, the others hell no way too addicting.012 Reply- +1 y

about OP's update. that's explains the high spike in crime. dumb down Oregon and keep them voting blue through and be democrat foot soldiers who will riot all night and day hopped up on meth if a republican gets into office
Hitler did the same thing with his soldiers democrats play dirty - +1 y
people are going to get hooked younger and younger and with Harris wanting 16 year olds to vote will just turn them into meth addict blue voters who will riot and riot keeping the state blue forever. until one day it implodes into itself. I would NEVER raised my child in a state that has full decriminalization.

+1 yI think people found with illegal drugs in them shouldn't serve jail time but get sentenced to get therapy / get on methadone programs / get on suboxone programs
00 Reply18.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Supportive. Just need fda, doctors etc to say what dosages are safe- just like they do with tobacco and alcohol. Not sure why cocaine or heroine couldn’t be sold in diluted forms legally. E-meth, baby.
