Are the people who are afraid of guns scared because of lack of exposure to them?

They are afraid, because they have been fed a narrative, that guns will kill, and the only way to stop them is to ban them. The problem with that narrative; a gun left out kills no one; it is a tool, and it can be used to kill just like a knife, club, spear, or any other tool that can be used in self defense.
Guns kill no one. People kill people; they use a gun to kill, because it allows them not to be up close to their target. If everyone is educated about guns, and their proper use, they would not be afraid. Look at Sweden, they have guns all over their country , and they have very few gun incidents; every citizen knows how to use a gun, and has spent at least 2 years in the military, where they learned what war is about, and that they really did not want to be in a war; so diplomacy was key to learn; but, it was also important to have a nation which could come together as a single force, and defend itself. It used to be that no foreign nation wanted to attack America, because everyone had a gun, and they did not know where they were.
They think that guns kill people on their own! My neighbor says he's been watching my AR-15 like a hawk for the past few months and, so far, it hasn't even TRIED to attack him or anyone else!
What's REALLY going on is that the demoncraps are brainwashing their idiot followers into thinking that we should all give up our guns for safety! What they REALLY want is for us to give up our guns so they (those in government) can have COMPLETE control over us and do anything they want to us because, then, we have no way to stop them!! THAT'S what the 2nd Amendment is all about!! It's not just so some guy can go out and shoot a deer (basically, a big dog) any time he wants, it's to give US the ability to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government, like the one we have now, and, if we so choose, to use this force to overthrow them and put someone in place that WILL do right by us!! I'm almost betting there's GONNA be a revolution, soon!! 1776 all over again! If it DOES happen, I DON'T think it's gonna be pretty!
At the time of the creation of the USA, George Washington et al. stated that the purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that the people would be armed so that they could protect themselves against a tyrannical government and overthrow a tyrannical government.
The Second Amendment is about giving the people the means to resist exactly the sort of Communist tyranny that today's Democrats want to impose upon everyone.
That is why Democrats and their useful idiots want to disarm the people.
Thanks!! always glad to make someone laugh! Maybe I should turn pro.
Thank you! I try!
I really can’t say because I don’t have much exposure, but I think that that might be part of it. What we hear about guns are things like school shootings. I have never heard any of positive outcome coming from having a gun. It also scares me to think that someone else has that much control over my life when they are standing across the room from me.
I believe so. I've never seen a gun before, with the exception of those on TV and in movies. I'm afraid of guns because of this. My dad has a friend who is a cop and he isn't afraid of guns at all.

Afraid of guns? There are plenty of reasons to be afraid of guns, they are built to perform a function that is objectively terrifying. If anything people being less afraid of guns because they are "used to them" is a dangerous desensitization of a real threat. Bad things happens when people stop seeing guns as something to be respected and instead see them as an every day item.
Also I do not fear guns necessarily. I recognize the potential it has for violence and the various effects it has in society and treat them accordingly. For example I see very few reasons why civilians should have access to firearms, they simply have very little purpose in a modern society. Very few people have a legitimate reason to own guns such as for sport or hunting and most have it for some sort of hobby or because they are afraid of the government and/or criminals.
Perhaps the most disturbing fact about Americans and guns is that Americans uses guns to feel safe. Truly insane logic that.
No, they're afraid of getting shot because someone with a gun is pissed-off at them...
... or that their First Grader is coming home from class in a body bag because a nutjob has assault rifles feels elementary school kids are destroying the world.
I will say that something shocking but interesting when I moved here is how early guns are introduced to kids. In my local newspaper. at the start of hunting season, they have pictures of kids - tweens or younger - with their first kills. Around Christmas 2008 I think, my father-in-law gave my not-quite-6 step-granddaughter her "My Pink Rifle" or something like that from Walmart. It upset me but I was open-minded. I came to realize that kids were learning a healthy respect for these weapons from a very young age and so they weren't killing themselves when they became curious teens because they were adept at understanding how to use these weapons safely.
I only wish that people could control their emotions as well.
In Steelville, some guy shot some guy who lives near me who was a member of a party of floaters on the Meramec River. This one guy had to piss on the gravel bar of the river, and so the owner had to "defend my property"... He had to defend his property from a guy who pisses, but the countless animals who piss on your property are no problem? So, I have a dead neighbor because he had to pee and the owner with a gun has a problem with human pee but not squirrel or deer pee.
That's what's fucked up here in Dueling Banjo Country.

I can't speak for any, but the GFs that I have taught, and shown how to shoot. Several were TERRIFIED of guns, having never shot one, or held one, and believing the LIES OF THE MEDIA!!
I showed them how to hold them, how to load, and how to shoot, using a Laser system, that lets you shoot, in the house, and hit targets, without the recoil, or bang!!
I then took them to a shooting range, and taught them with a.22 Target pistol, that is kind of heavy, but no recoil, so they wouldn't be afraid!!
EVERY ONE of them shot REALLY WELL!!
They weren't afraid, anymore, and started to like shooting, and some even bought their own handguns!!
The worst thing in the world is some one with a firearm and is scared of it.
the next worst thing in the world is someone with a firearm that has no respect for it.
The next is over confidence / over familiarity with them.
I was shooting from a fairly young age, then when I joined the UK Forces.
even now I still shoot but it’s very long range stuff (0.5 BMG).
one of the biggest problems with firearms is exposure to them without the correct type of training, this means bad skills develop, bad habits with weapons safety.
it is scary just how bad some people can be on a range, people that should know better having brain farts and doing something fucking stupid.
I think so.
But I grew up with guns from a very early age. Not necessarily for protection, but hunting. Dad was always a hunter, and at around 8 or 9 he'd take 1 or 2 of us with him squirrel hunting.(rural area and 5 kids to feed). We couldn't go alone until we got a license, I think at 15 or 16. One year he got us all small rifles for Christmas.
He never had a pistol, but had lots of regular types of rifles, nothing like the types of today.
I currently have 2 pistols and 6 rifles one of which is an AR-15, I won in a Citizens Police Association raffle.
I shoot 1 of the pistols and the AR-15 at gun ranges. Tho others haven't been used in over 50yrs. Three of them a considered Antique.
I would never be scared of a gun, unless of course it's pointed at me.
From what I've seen, that seems to be what's going on... Everyone I know who is anti gun has ideas about guns that are simply false. The idea that you can just pick up a gun, for example, is pretty much false. It's 100% false at official gun stores and definitely frowned upon at gun shows. Even at gun shows, where you can legally do that, gun owners tend to be some of the most law abiding people I know; I've seen gun show salespeople do background checks and such anyway. Gun owners don't generally screw around when it comes to the law.
Could be a lack of exposure, or bad experience (s) with guns in the past.
Could also be social/peer pressure (the media and other platforms negative reviews of guns)
I think people fear guns because misuse of a firearm can result in death or serious bodily injury. They’re a primary tool to kill. I can understand why people fear them and they’re very loud. Having law enforcement and military experience, I feel extremely confident handling them. I however fear most civilians using firearms as they often make mistakes that jeopardize the safety of everyone around them.
@not_average I TOTALLY disagree with you, that firearms, IN CIVILIAN HANDS, are "a primary tool to kill"! I have NEVER met ANYONE, Legally-owning, that WANTS TO EVER KILL A PERSON, with their rifles, or handguns!!
Criminals do that!! Oh, and by the way, THEY DON'T FOLLOW THE LAWS!!!
Target shooting is in the OLYMPICS!!
MILLIONS of LEGAL GUN-OWNING citizens enjoy target-shooting AS SPORT!
The civilian-legal versions may look similar to the military ones, but THESE ARE NOT "ASSAULT WEAPONS" as the media hype says!
Proper training, like that sponsored by the Boy Scouts and the NRA (NOT THE EVIL EMPIRE!!!) will help reduce the sad, accidental deaths.
@JackSmy A firearm serves as an instrument to kill. There’s target shooting, but a firearm is designed to do that. Of course criminals use it for that because it’s highly effective in comparison to a knife a sword.
@JackSmy People are afraid of death. Guns are a primary and effective tool to kill somebody. Homicide committing by a guy is much more common than other weapons. That’s why they fear them.
@JackSmy I’m pro 2nd Amendment but I understand why people fear guns. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen someone die from a gunshot wound in front of you, but it’s an unpleasant experience.
And yeah, it’s also pretty damn scary.
@not_average For many that don't have one, have never shot one, or are just afraid of them, it is VERY FRIGHTENING!!
I have taught probably close to 30 women, over the last 25 years, how to shoot. Mostly, I ask them WHY, they think they need a gun! Most say defense/protection, at home. Some choose to get a concealed carry permit, some don't.
Once they hold one, and feel it, and learn how it works, they relax a bit. I always start them with little.22 pistols, revolvers, at first, and tell them it is much like a little 'cap gun' like when they were kids.
When they aren't afraid of the recoil, most shoot REALLY WELL, and feel really good about themselves! Many even laugh, and joke about why they were so afraid, before!
It's not for everyone, but is it not something to be afraid of, especially if you don't know.
The politicians spew enough lies, and create enough fear, with their incorrect terms, and lack of understanding!!
@JackSmy Yeah Im more on your side than you think. I’m a Republican / Libertarian and own several firearms. I’ve designed my own AR. I just get why people are scared of them. I think familiarity makes everyone more comfortable but at the end of the day, they are still specifically designed to kill. People are afraid of death thus they are afraid of anything designed for it. My grandpa who was in the Marine Corps just like me won’t even look at my designs or touch a firearm because he’s seeing his friends get mowed down by rounds in Vietnam right in front of him.
@not_average Perhaps these were designed to kill, though many originated with hunting rifles, and the purpose was hunting, to feed the family, the VAST MAJORITY that own ones, like the AR-15 are LEGAL OWNERS, following the laws, and target shooting only!! MILLIONS, of AR-15s in the hands of LEGAL OWNERS, and NONE OF THEM KILL ANYONE, EVER!!!
It's the NUTS, the CRAZY FCKS, that get them, and most often illegally, that kill people!! The VAST MAJORITY of SANE PEOPLE, don't ever want to kill anyone!! Not even someone breaking in to their home!! Most people would NOT FIRE, and NOT KILL!
I am sorry that some are afraid of these, because there is no reason, and plenty of teachers for safety, and learning to be safe!
The ones that don't care about laws, ARE NEVER GOING TO FOLLOW THE LAWS!! MORE LAWS WON'T STOP THEM!! Why don't people get that? More than 300 MILLION guns, in the hands of LAW-ABIDING citizens, that don't even have a PARKING TICKET, yet the Liberal idiots think more laws will help!!
I think that’s true. Many people that grow up around guns, used for hunting, sport, or just protection, learn a healthy respect for them unless something traumatic happens from irresponsible handling.
Nope. Im scared of them after being shot at for just existing too close to the target they were aiming for. I was inches from one of them hitting me in the face. I have also tried shooting one, but I hated the feel of it in my hands.
oh shit! how terrifying
My mom and dad were both air force mp's and my mom was considered a marksman. I spent most of my life in south Texas and the rest in Pennsylvania where hunting in both areas are pretty rampant. My incident occurred in middle school which is also when I tried to learn to fire one.
Pretty sure exposure wasn't the issue its just that one event was enough to swear me off them lol
And also thank you. I really do appreciate it. I dont begrudge anyone their right to own guns its just they make me super uncomfortably
It wouldn't surprise me at all if this plays a big part of it
I am nervous around guns for the same reason I am nervous around knives.
They are incredibly lethal weapons and I would rather not be around anyone carrying such weapons.
Nope, they're just scared of the crazy people that have easy access to them.
You might be a good person with a gun, but for every you, there's a crazy variant just itching to use it on innocent people minding their business.
Possibly as my lack of exposure to guns whilst not non existent is relatively low, my hatred (and it's not a fear) of guns, is the fact that a school shooting is allowed to happen in this world and no positive action is taken afterwards.
Lack of exposure, and lack of understanding combined with idiotic leftist groups making guns look like the absolute most evil thing on the planet.
Everyone should at least have a healthy respect for firearms. In the wrong hands they can kill you.
People are afraid of guns because wacho's with guns kill innocent people. If you're not trained on how to use a gun, how to store a gun, how to keep guns safe from kids, trained in combat, to prevent a gun from being stolen from you, don't get a gun.
Definitely, and lack of familiarity with them. Safe gun handling habits are easy to teach and easy to learn.
I dunno. I have very little exposure to guns (I only held one that one of my dead cousins owned), and I'm not afraid of them.
Lack of exposure and proper training to handle them plus some have it drilled into their heads by the media and or others such as parents or a certain political party/group
Yes, lack of exposure, combined with their cowardly slave mentality and lack of IQ points.
That's part of it, another issue is all of the propaganda and hype that's out there.
Nope. Those boom sticks can really do nothing without their crazy owners.
No, I have one. But I’m for more regulation because I’m looking at the issues dispassionately. Gun advocates are more emotional about their masturbatory arsenals.
The statistics are alarming to say the least.
but sure lack of exposure or experience with them can be overwhelming
I don't like weapons, many people have died because of weapons, either of mulfunction or mishandling...
Or perhaps too much exposure to them in the form of guns killing loved ones? That's a possibility.
Definitely not. I used them a lot. Glad I dont own any now
Yes! They need taught what they truly are like by someone responsible.
Probably more because of their potential of death.
Yes, I truly believe so.
How are you?
Probably l
That and portrayal by the media
No, because of the idiots who like them.
No, it's because they have no idea how they work.
well that plus having sand in their vagina’s
I'd say so, yes.
I think so
Yes, I think so
Probably?
I think that people are uncomfortable around other people that have the guns. I'm not afraid of doors, even though my fingers were crunched by many doors throughout my life. I'm more concerned about people slamming doors around me. likewise, I think people who don't like guns fear gun owners. and there are some real doozies out there.
