Why nobody is punished when someone is wrongly imprisoned?

Because we have a crap legal system.

We have a concept called qualified immunity that keeps law enforcement officials from prosecution, even if they threw someone into jail knowing they were innocent.

North Carolina paid this guy $750,000 for 44 years of wrongful imprisonment.

There's no one to be punished.
The judge acted as a filter for the arguments of both sides, so it's the defendants shitty arguments that lead him there.
The prosecutor is just presenting the facts they know (I assume we aren't dealing with willful negligence and active malice).
