+1 yFocus more on maintaining good relations with friends, nieghbor's, and family, and don't worry about the lethal efficiency of self defense weapons and utility tools, domestic supplies, and sporting goods merchandise, since the worst case scenario, should be the only scenario, to require an option of last resort.
Removing yourself from a hazardous situation is not going to be nearly as effective and simple as avoiding a hazardous situation all together, and denying opportunities for someone too do you harm, is easier and safer than defending yourself after the fact.
A job that required me to carry a sidearm while on shift made the legal carry and concealment of that weapon a requirement for working on that job, but on the few occasions in which I had to defend myself from an attack off duty, I learned that drawing that weapon, acquiring the target, disengaging the safety, and squeezing the trigger, took about 6 seconds longer than the 1/4 second I had available to me to do all that stuff, where the key ring I already had in my hand, with all the keys on it, proved an effective distraction when driven into the eye or mouth, that gave me valuable seconds to decide to disable my attackers, or remove myself from that situation and contact authorities in safety.
I've had experience in staying alive and ending lives on deployments, with ground combat engagement being my MOS (Military Occupational Specialty), I have learned to use the simple, least complicated means of simultaneously disarming and disemboweling enemy combatants when ammunition was expended or magazines needed replacement, in the same fluid movements that keep me out of thier line of fire or path of thier edged weopons. The simple applications of quick, efficient movement and intent, are always the most effective and easy to apply, and have the best results for survival. The tools you use everyday in your workplace or at home for cooking, cleaning, and basic maintenance of yard and home, are the tools you have the most familiarity and experience with handling, and those are the ones that should be the most readily available in any given situation you are in at home or at work, and should be used if you have to defend your life against an attacker.
It's like like my great grandmother always used to say, "A bird in the hand, is worth three in the bush!", and is true of everyday life. and upon failure to avoid the situation that puts you in harm's way, whatever you got in your hand is guaranteed to be more effective, than something unfamiliar and devastatingly lethal, that will take more time than you have available to you, to pull out and use on a surprise attacker.
That being, if the attacker is unkind enough to step back and give you the time to hurriedly pull out a deadly "unfamiliar" weapon too sever one of your own finger's🤬, or shoot yourself🤯 in panic😳 driven🥺 haste⚕️ makes🤕 waste👻, while your assailant goes 👉😅😂🤣🤑😘🌹💸👈, for your trouble⚰️.

+1 yWhat kind of survival are you talking about? Are you talking about protection or are you talking about when your out in the woods? If your out in the woods you need to figure out what animals are going to be around i. e. bear and have a high enough caliber gun, preferablly handgun (for emergencies when you don't have a rifle or what have you with you) that will stop them.
If your talking within a city, that is a different story. You need to figure out what the laws are in your state, but more then likely you will want a 9mm which will be easy to handle, hollow points (they expand in the body and do more damage with less chance of them exiting and hurting some one else), also train to use it and specifically do a double tap i. e. two quick consecutive shots to the main body mass (the double strike causes a shockwave effect that increase over all damage done).
For unarmed, knives work, but also a hard blunt object like a combat pen can also work and be unassuming and is likely going to cause fewer problems with the police, pepper spray/mace (don't use tasers, they are not as effective) and things of that nature.10 Reply

+1 yI like knives for close range.
It sounds like we're talking various survival weaponry and not necessarily actual survival gear. So I'm running with what I'd want as a loadout during a zombie apocalypse.
Long Range:
- Rifle (whatever I can find/one that is easiest for me to maintain/find ammo for)
- Bow and arrow (hunting/quieter weapon)
Mid-Range:
- Machete x2 (for utility and combat)
- staff/long straight stick (utility mostly, could fashion into a spear or fishing rod, too)
- handgun (optional)
Short Range:
- Pocket knife (maybe two)
- Push knife (somewhere I can easily grab if I'm restrained - will have to figure out where this might be)20 Reply
+1 yInner cities have a small 22. In the outdoors get a 45 or a 9mm

Depends on how comfortable you are with guns

.22 snake charmer break down survival rifle is good, 200 ft of 1/4” rope, a life straw, waterproof matches, flint and steel, a box of steel wool ( not SOS pads) waterproof boots, a waxed canvas tarp or pup tent. Military attic 3 sleeping bag.

+1 yFishing and trapping stuff, a knife and something that keeps rain off from you.
If you insist on taking that stupid gun with you that others propose: once you have missed all your shots, and no bullets are left: you can still use it as a tent pole.14 Reply- +1 y
@rcljr You make that sound as if it's wrong to have an opinion that isn't yours? :)
Shoot as much as you like. I just don't see the usefulness for myself... and I communicate it. - +1 y
@rcljr I am not against guns per se - and when so, NOT specifically for ''political'' reasons. I find them inefficient, and I see better options.
''Survival'' - to me - means to see the next day; not to re-enact an action movie or a video game.
So: I now stand in front of your ''heavily armed hungry crowd'' - and me and my gun will now take them all out; with not one of them trying to do to same to me?
If I was stupid enough to stand and wait for them, I maybe deserve to be ''Darwined''.
Scenario #2: I (or ''we'') want YOUR stuff. We will get you while you have a pee behind a tree; while you sleep, while you carry a bundle of firewood or such. 4 of us for each 1 of you will come from 4 corners. Does your gun have 4 barrels, pointing in all 4 directions? Does your gun shield you from a thrown rock, knife, Tomahawk?
One main ''reason'' for not betting on guns: A firearm needs ammo. Each shot makes one bullet less, and at some stage you need a replacement. Can YOU produce the chemicals and the bullets and cartridges yourself? Where do you get these from? In 'your' s. h. t. f. scenario your ''suppliers'' will either be looted, sold out, etc. - empty supermarket shelves of toilet paper have taught you NOTHING?
OR: the ''suppliers'' have already taken sides with NOT YOU, unfortunately.
Unloaded guns are - I said it - just decorative tent poles.
Next: ''Survival'' is not just quarreling with each other. It's also about staying healthy and fit, getting food and water.
If I'm ''on the move'': I can carry only so and so much. So I want to pick equipment that has multiple purposes.
If I have a ''base camp'': it will not allow intruders to get in. If they find it, that is.
Survival how? Like wilderness or day to day protection?
You said you have knives so I’m assuming you mean wilderness but if you meant day to day I’d ditch the knives and just get a tiny hand gun. I don’t know much about them but that’s what I’d do01 Reply

they are decent tools and lethal16 Reply- +1 y
@rcljr obviously, as I tend to shoot ELR yeah I am rather aware of that, thanks for explaining it.
equally a rifle firing.308 is rubbish within 10 feet ( even a bit further if a civilian using it). - +1 y
@rcljr again thanks for your input, never know of I survived in the forces without knowing this stuff.

@rcljr yeah best idea keep all the yes sir civilians with you, and off load those with actual experience of shit, I guess it helps you look good, whatever

Guns; .22 cal for small game, .308 for bigger game (deer, elk, bear), shot gun for birds or large game pistol for self defence

Right, lesbian… the ones that are actively destroying the nuclear family and begging their uncles to donate sperm to impregnate their wives that they cannot conceive with just to carry on the family genetics because otherwise it wouldn’t be possible for your bloodline to survive through you… turns out you do need a man to survive. 🤡
