    " I before E except after C "

    " excieptions "
    " excieptions "

I before E except after C… and 66 other exceptions (BY ALBERT FREEMAN)

" A few years ago I looked up all the words that don’t conform to the I before E except after C rule of English spelling. I found more words than I had expected. I ended up writing a short tale containing 66 unique exceptions to the rule:

Feisty old Keith lives in the sovereign state of Brunei and is heir to the reign of the sheik. He’s a foreign species in a society of nescient financiers. With sleight of hand, in a heinous heist at the hacienda of the Reich, Keith seized a freight of eight buddleias. His forfeit was to either guess the height of a gneiss statue of a deity or to whistle a leitmotiv; he deigned to do neither, feigning injury to be pardoned.

Keith deifies heifers and feeds them seitan when they are deficient in protein. This he does conscientiously, reining in the dose if he suspects a surfeit may induce seizure. In such a case he would inject codeine into their veins.

After noticing seiches on the lake, Keith was prescient enough to efficiently conduct a scientific seismic survey of the weir before fishing with his seine net.

In his leisure time Keith relaxes among teil trees, veiled in his beige eider-down peignoir while proficiently spinning a dreidel, sipping from a seidel of beer.

Heigh-ho, that’s sufficient weight to the tale of weird Keith’s conscience. Don’t even start me on his neighbour Deirdre, an expert on ancient glaciers!

    The end.

I found even more exceptions to the rule, but I couldn’t figure out how to fit them into my (otherwise perfectly plausible and coherent) story. The words I left out are: cepheid, deicide, deictic, teiidae, cleidoic, gleization, greige and greisen.

Apparently, since I wrote my daft little tale, the I before E rule has been dropped from the national curriculum.

So, what can we learn from Keith’s story? Sometimes rules can be pretty misleading, counterproductive or redundant. Don’t simply accept every rule you are told. I’m not suggesting complete anarchy, but ask a few questions such as:

    Why is this a rule?
How long has this rule been in place?
    Is this rule still relevant?
What happens if I break the rule?
Could we actually do something amazing by breaking the rule?
Remember, if the Ghostbusters hadn’t broken their rules, they wouldn’t have defeated the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. "

"Be yourself (everyone else is already taken)."
(I agree with this; but most people don't like genuine people because genuine people will offend more than one person; most people like agreeable attractive people, like celebrities.)

"Women don't care about how much money a man makes or his looks."
(Obviously written before OnlyFans was a thing, but long after prostitution was a thing...)

"There's something interesting about anyone and everyone; you just have to figure out what that something is."
(Nah... Like 95% of people are boring, predictable, and easily replaceable in my opinion.)

"Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."
(Like cancer! Or the COVID vaccine!)

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
(You mean like people going to work everyday and having the same home habits, yet expecting life to get better? I could've sworn the definition of insanity was "mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct daily affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior." Besides, Albert Einstein never said that anyway; a fictional novelist created by Rita Mae Brown in 1983 did.)

"Survival of the fittest" - It isn't the fit that survive, but those who are most able to adapt to changing circumstances as the need arises. The flexible survive, not the fit.

False. Only white men don't receive Affirmative Action in universities and the workplace and only men must register for Selective Service or become felons, be fined and lose voting rights both violating the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment to the U. S. Constitution and that's just the beginning. Aside from not interacting with the government to create change, you're doing great. Caring takes heart! 🥰

This might be a little off topic but the thing that really grinds my gears is the inappropriate and over use of 'efficiency' as though that is always the most desirable thing and the only measure.

Efficiency is about not wasting resources, about spending as little as possible but very often what we want is not efficiency at all, it is effectiveness.

For example: In a motor race, you dont particularly give a rats ass about efficiency what you want is performance, you want the maximum possible speeds.

Ok, efficiency is going to be in the mix there somewhere, you dont want to be needlessly wasteful, because that is suboptimal but its not the prime concern.

    "People everywhere are the same"

Having been fortunate enough to do some traveling in my life, I assure you, they're NOT

"Diversity is strength" is another one.

If you study world history you will see that the countries that have too much diversity always have conflict and wars, because people from different backgrounds simply can't live together.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."

As if there isn't a certain level of probability that determines the outcome of many of our actions. I could go fishing, and during fishing I could cast my line 19 times without so much as a nibble, but on the 20th cast I could catch a whopper.

"follow your passions" is terrible advice. you should follow your abilities and turn them into your passions

if you follow your passions guess what? you're probably going into a field where everyone likes the same things you do... and that's a lot of people because everyone likes the same things really

      "war gets shit done"
Anyone who actually paid attention in history class knows what a post war economy looks like. International courts, war crimes, peace treaties, dont exist because someone came along and said "make love not war" and everyone changed their mind. People lived through unemployment, food shortages and economic crashes to realise breaking out a war over everything is not optimal for both parties.

And especially since the dawn of the atom bomb people have realised how quickly the world can be completely annihilated to fucking nothing if a nuclear war breaks out.

Peacetime prosperity always was the result of resources seized via war. Wars aren't fought for fun they're fought to procure that which people need. Thats what they don't teach you in history. Lass because most people can't face the fact that nature is a cruel merciless thing. And that strength will ever dictate the fate of the weak

You really ignored everything i said. And even if war brings prosperity i doubt its the only way to get there. Especially when it puts so much at stake.

And again, the reason why wars are fought is pretty obvious. Except for you, people can only seek change through force and nothing else. And lets assume again that even if force is absolutely the only way to get there, that in no way justifies the use of violent measures past that in the future.

Regarding what you said at the end, it is correct that strength decides the fate of the weak. But this doesn't always take this evil cruel form. Think of a loving mother caring for her offspring. Nature is cruel, yes, but claiming that thats all it is not correct.
