I can't really do in depth, I dont know nearly enough about it.
It is true though to say that the US set up training camps there as a way of attacking the USSR indirectly, this is called a proxy war.
The Middle East has oil and control of oil is strategically important because you need oil to fuel the weapons of war, it is also important for many other things, the whole world really runs or not on how much oil you have.
The only reason the US would pull out of Afganistan is if it thought it could still get the oil without commiting troops.
Spoiler alert: The US doesn't give a rats ass about democracy or what is happening to any of the people there.
You can't win in Afghanistan. US couldn't, Soviet Union couldn't, the British Empire couldn't, Persian Empire couldn't. The Afghan people don't want to fight because the Taiban has been fighting since 1979 and their method to always have more soldiers is to prove a stable income along with their extremist beliefs. They are like the slower and far smarter version of ISIS, with only taking Afghanistan as their goal. Right now for the US Afghanistan exit is like Vietnam exit. We left behind cowardly government military who just surrendered to Taiban when we stopped fighting their war.
We invaded Afghanistan for revenge against Al-Qaeda for the attacks on 9/11. We could have been gone as soon as Al-Qaeda was neutralized. However, while the war was horribly costly to most American people, the war was incredibly profitable for any number of well connected profiteers like defense contractors, so we stayed in Afghanistan with no practical mission or end goal. The US is in decline and the people who comprise the core fighting force of the US military (not the administrative positions in the military) are beginning to resent making sacrifices for elites who despise them. Consequently the US is pulling out of several conflicts abroad and turning inward, with the elite increasingly focused on suppressing domestic opposition to their rule.
The US spent 20 years conducting a war for the sole purpose of propping up US industries and specifically US defense contractors, and making Bush look like a hero, something it has done many times before for different politicians. Unfortunately, that war began to be very costly in terms of political popularity after 20 years of no apparent progress, and besides, the Taliban began to make the US look rather stupid. The US also had other places to conduct its money-generating wars and didn't really need Afghanistan anymore, so it decided to leave. It is doing that now, and for the most part ignoring the people that helped it, and leaving them to the wrath of the Taliban.

Your first part is right. Osama bin Laden was the US man to lead the fightback against the Soviets.
But the US is a devil, and the devil always betrays. The US betrayed Osama and demonised him, despite creating him, and has done the same to it's Afghan puppet government now.
We should evacuate all of our people and get out of there. We've been there 10 years too long. Even the Afghani people who are anti-Taliban don't want our help. You can't help those who have no interest in helping themselves or don't like the people that are supplying them the help. So it's time to leave and only bomb from afar if they happen to become a direct threat.
i am willing to bet that they have it in thier mind that the USA is in thier back pocket. and will come to the rescue as usuall. you would think of how many years we were there. they would learn how to fight thier own damned battles now...
It’s one of those countries that wants what it wants. Just like Vietnam. What they want is self destructive and all kinds of people have tried to tell them so but they have no will to fight for what’s right. Let them go
Lets just hope Afghanistan turns into a country like Vietnam when this is over. Vietnam is peaceful and non-theatening. But i fear the Afghanistan will turn into a Terrorist state that will just fund Terrorism and Global Criminal activity.

Biden needlessly delayed the withdraw, afghan leaderships just gave up despite being better equipped and trained. Also, pakistan needlessly funded the radicalization of the taliban.
