Why does there seem to be this widespread belief that conspiracy theorists are stupid?

I would imagine it's because some of the more batshit insane theories typically have the most vocal followers, so they become the "face" of conspiracy theories.

Sure, there are some more credible ones, like, say, surrounding the JFK assassination, for example. However, for every one of those, there are 50 people in tinfoil hats talking about the alien lizardmen in Washington stealing your thoughts.

Those tend to be the ones that people notice, and associate with conspiracy theories, and that's also typically how they are portrayed in the media, increasing that perception of conspiracy theorists.
