The few encounters I had with individuals were mostly positive. In my country there are significant issues with the combination of low employment and high birth rates. They are using the social security system to finance entire families, which creates stable groups not seeking employment and not trying to integrate. That group is also constantly increasing, which imho potentially risks significant social conflict in the future, even though things are relatively calm now. Once the rest of the society starts having problems financing such a ponzi scheme, people may feel forced to remove funding for social programs abruptly, which would create something akin to a low intensity civil war along racial lines, when people who relied on the government suddenly have no way of reliably sustaining themselves.
This is a combination of historical coincidence and bad policy, I don't really blame those gypsies who remain in such isolated groups. Policy needs to shift asap into a negative tax model which increases incentives to work and still have children, but decreases incentives to have children without stable employment. Unfortunately such changes can't be done overnight and if they are not started soon, gypsies could become the target of a very hostile attitude in a not too distant future. There is already tension now, but if some sort of green deal coincides with economic crisis and a chain of governments defaulting on their debts, violence could rise to levels not since since WW2.10 Reply

A different lifestyle.
I lived the gypsy or nomadic life for a couple months in 2019. I was in my trailer and they were in anything they could get and convert... school buses, box trucks, cars, old trailers, etc. Very free, but also without the niceties of a real home; I like having a roomy bedroom and nice kitchen. I like taking a shower everyday if I want. In that life, you shower when you can, and it might be 10 days till the next one.
So it is an adventure, and many people live that life year in and year out.
For money, they pick up odd jobs, like at Amazon for seasonal, or work the oil rigs - I did gate guarding for 4 months, or the beet harvest, or whatever else they can do for big cash for a few weeks of work.11 Reply
+1 yUmm I generally avoid them.
They tend to stick to their own community.
They beg a lot, and some used to come into the retail store and steal.
We caught a mum and daughter once with £80 worth of clothes between them.
We were suspicious after they'd been in the fitting room for quite sometime then suddenly disappeared without bring any items to put back or change size etc.
My mum said one came to her home begging and selling flowers, because she refused to buy any the woman said she'd put a curse on her.
I avoid them because I don't need negative energy.
It's unfortunate that they are poor but I cannot be expected to pay out for them.
They're in a amazing country, the uk that offer state help.
It's not much but it is something.10 Reply
Good, quite people they love life , children, wants to live freely , in my country they absolutely hate to stay inside a house they stay outside.. they like music they dance a lot and sing all the time. From observing them in my country ofc they seem to marry very early like 14-15 years old. If you try to stop them they would make it a big deal and asks the government to stay out of their life and their traditions. Oh and they also have their own language. I still don’t know what language they speak.. but they don’t speak my country language they have their own language too!!

+1 yAre there still bands of them roaming around back on the east coast? I've never seen them. You always hear stories and myths about them. Not so much here in the upper Midwest. I do not think they would last long here, or they would settle in and be stationary. We pretty much take care of the problems if their out of hand. Things like accidents happen all the time or they mite just leave one nite and be gone like the wind. People here don't like problems they just want life to go smooth and they will make it happen that way.
10 Reply1.9K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. If you talk about the "rom" as we call them here, they're a plague. To the point it's probably one thing everyone around the world agrees with.
Here they cause so many problems, if there is a list of crimes, they probably did 90% of them. Stealing, beating, murder, violence, drugs, child abuse, destruction of property... Those who don't hate them never lived near them.
Any experience I had with them was bad. Either they tried to steal from me, or others around me, or were violent. I once saw them sending their child to hit other kids who were waiting for the bus, and if they kids said anything, parents threatened them.10 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. True Romani are some of the nicest people I've met. Honest, hard working and generally warm people to be around.
The people who get the nickname gypsies because they live in caravans and travel around but are dirty, dishonest louts I have no time for00 Reply
+1 yLove them! If you mean in the colloquial modern Western sense of ‘nomadic, free-spirited and bohemian’ types…
If you mean actual Gypsies from Eastern Europe, keep tabs on your wallet if you meet one.20 ReplyThey don't work and steal/con people. They drink and smoke weed around young children of which they have many. I don't respect that about any enthnicity but it seems to be especially prevelent in Gypsies.
00 Reply1.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. They have a very bad reputation... especially for being thieves. I'm sure they aren't truly as horrible as the rumors though. Another thing I've heard about them is that they move a lot and don't stay in any one place for very long.

00 ReplyMy interactions with them have mostly been ok. Down here we have to Irish Settlers, and the youth tend to be obnoxious and troublesome. Overall though if you know how to handle them than there won't be any issues.
