How many statistics on the Soviet Union are just made up?

I am kinda spooked by all the data and numbers when I look into it. They don't add up at all.
All kinds of numbers don't make any sense.

How many numbers we hear are just random?

A lot of what is publicly known about the USSR from its inception to dissolution is almost entirely based on whatever the Russians claimed, which was more often than not just propaganda. Any kind of concrete insider information that the west ascertained would've generally never seen the light of day (at least accurately) because it would likely expose whoever or whatever their source was. A few exceptions were whenever defectors came in.

It's likely the USSR itself didn't actually know or track a lot of its own numbers. Many countries still don't. There were entire towns and villages in eastern Russia that basically missed the revolution, the second world war, and even much of the cold war because they weren't worth the effort. When your entire government is built on the idea that people are fundamentally expendable, there's not really a serious demand to track them accurately, especially when it's exceedingly difficult (and arguably pointless) to bother investigating.

Now if you want to argue about whether or not the US is at that point right now, the answer is yes. Fudging, exaggerating, or otherwise fabricating numbers to meet political agendas is a second-nature past time here, and in a country with an even higher population than the USSR had, you bet your ass 99.999% of individuals are expendable, or rather exploitable when convenient. This is why you should always take "official" statements with a grain of salt.

Yeah i was looking into the wild numbers and the scholars who looked them up. A massive grain of salt. Wild wild wild numbers. 2 million in the gulag, 2 million died, 2 million maxed out the gulag... that's one weird stat. and then you get this 50 million stat of people dying. who? when? between when and when? how old? Of what? where did they go? Why doesn't census reflect this?

I don't know about all that other stuff. But I think people by and large recognize that the soviet figures are a little off. It was a a terrible time but you can make numbers say anything.

I think you have to draw a distinction. You can always quantify how many people were shot by a military.

When it comes to starvation, harsh living conditions, illness. Those stats are destined to be screwy.

So we are told that 2 million people were in the gulag at most at any given time. 18 million total.
(That does not make any sense even if there was a high turn over.)

But what's more astounding is the data claiming that 50 million died in the gulag? Died in the gulag or during the gulag system? Wtf? Were they killed before entering the gulag or is the data just pulled from the sky? Did Stalin claim lives outside the gulag?

What about all the natural deaths? What is a 'Stalin' death and a regular death? From when to when? from 1918 or 1929? To 1953 or 1990?

How can these dates be so unclear?

The more I look into the scholarship the more I realize the numbers are screwy.

I think it stems back to Hitler, see Hitler though he was doing right so kept records of almost everything so they have those figures available to this day, after Stalin's death his inner circle set out to destroy any records that could paint a bad light over Stalin so they silenced problems including each other, now historians have just generated some numbers and they stuck

I guess it depends. There are historians who have stats backed up by tons of research and evidence. Then there are morons who try quoting some dumb stat on Reddit.
