Joseph Manchin is an American politician and businessman serving as the senior United States senator from West Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010.

Actually, as a guy who lives and works in Washington, DC, used to work on the Hill and still work in politics, I not only know who he is, I have actually met him. Just to add that the fact that not many Americans would have known who he is until the recent headlines is not that surprising.

Americans are not, as a general rule, terribly well informed about politics and government. Indeed, a recent survey found that barely a third could name something as basic as the three branches of government. The same number could name their Member of the House or their two Senators.

While I don't necessarily fault Americans for this - after all, they have to take care of the kids, go to work, clean the house and get on with the daily business of life - they do not get a pass for the consequences of their thinking or lack of same. After all, a guy who was a not especially well known Senator in his day, who was not known for consistent principles and who was a not especially vocal Vice-President sat in his basement and said, "Elect me President."

The public looked at that and said, "Eh, works for me." Now that President - Mr. Biden - has a 55% DISapproval rating. Americans being very good at patting themselves on the back for their innate wisdom and then being horrified at the consequences of that not especially well informed wisdom.

Anyhow, in terms of the Hill, Senator Manchin is quite well known. Plus, speaking on a personal note, while I cannot say I know him well, I have found him to be courteous and intellectually serious. Ya can't do much better than that.
