Man that is freaking Russia. That's not Vietnam and that's not the Taliban. They have hypersonic missiles and Stealth NERVA rockets. They will SHOOT DOWN our stealth aircraft and sink destroyers, like nobody since Japan in WW2. An open war with Russia would be worse than WW2. The casualties on both sides would be in the millions even if both sides showed some "restraint" and didn't start using nukes.
Our modern government does not understand economics, never mind real symmetrical warfare anymore. Economics implies you do things both quickly and cost-effectively, both at the civilian level and the military level. Military economics implies you destroy targets that cost the enemy more money and resources than the munitions you are using to destroy those targets. The U. S. does not do economics anymore. that's why we have a nearly 30 trillion dollar federal debt. we cannot even win another Cold War with Russia, much less a hot one. - +1 y
If we end up in a real war with Russia, they'd bomb our oil pipe lines in Alaska, which would cripple both the U. S. and Canadian economy. You'd be looking at the worst economic disaster in the U. S. in modern times... and if I were a Russian Strategist, that would be one of the first things I'd target using NERVA rockets. I don't believe in Geneva convention, and I'm pretty sure the Communists don't either ever since the debacle at the end of WW2, so I'd expect the Russians to target our civilian infrastructure immediately if a war actually started.

What Girls & Guys Said
Opinion

3.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Not likely. Of course, sometimes wars happen by accident and the element of chance here cannot be ruled out. Thus it is to be hoped that an administration that, it must be said, has not, to say the least, so far demonstrated a gift for subtlety and nuance, will be able to manage this situation.
That said, the US interest in Ukraine is derivative and therefore, not being vital, will not likely lead to war. Not to mention the fact that the mobilization of a mere 8,500 men, given the size of the Russian armed forces, hardly constitutes a major move and is more symbolic than not.
That said, the problem is that if the United States seems to roll over and play dead on the Ukraine issue, then it opens up the possibility that both China and Russia may come to the conclusion that they can move against more sensitive targets - see also Taiwan (where we currently have no treaty obligations) and the Baltic states, where the United States does have NATO treaty obligations.
The other interest we have is in keeping Europe united. This getting to the US historic interest in preventing a dominant hegemon on the continent.
Currently, Germany is blocking the RAF from overflying German airspace. It is also now forbidding the transshipment of Western weapons to Ukraine across its' territory. (See the Three Emperor's League and the Nazi-Soviet Pact for other examples of German-Russian cooperation.) This then putting Poland and the Balts out on a limb.
If Germany is willing to side with Russia against Ukraine and there is no counterweight - in the form of the USA - on the other side, suddenly the whole NATO alliance looks shaky. Suffice to say, that would be to Russia's huge advantage.
So, and here I have only outlined in a VERY generalized way the state of play and skipped over a ton of nuance for sake of brevity, while we do not have a DIRECT interest in Ukraine, it does not mean that there is no interest at all. It is a derivative interest born of other issues but handled with reasonable dexterity, is not likely to lead to war.114 Reply- +1 y
@jordan156 Well, in the case of Germany, because it can have the USA serve to defend Germany while Germany economically profits in its relationship with Russia.
Most Americans popularly remember that Germany and Russia fought two world wars against each other. However, the truth is, that Germany and Russia have a complicated love/hate relationship. In economic terms, each benefits from the other. Russia is a supplier of raw materials and foodstuffs to Germany. Germany produces finished industrial products to Russia.
Each profits and this has always been true. Of course they don't fully trust each other and eastern Europe has been their bone of contention. However, for Germany at the moment, the Americans are assuring eastern Europe, thus freeing Germany to pursue an economic relationship with Russia.
CONT. - +1 y
Not the first time - see also the Three Emperor's League and the Nazi-Soviet pact.
As to France, it sides with Russia when Russia is opposed to Germany. At the moment, though, Germany and Russia are getting along and so France is supporting the USA in the Ukraine issue.
The key - and has been since 1871 - is Germany. The fourth largest economy in the world - Russia ranks as number 12 - right dead center of the continent. France is the 6th largest economy in the world but with far larger and better equipped armed forces.
That said, the populations of Europe in general and Germany and France in particular are aging demographically. Thus their tax base and workforce is shrinking, thus also the number of age for military service, and so their armed forces - though of high quality in France's case (Germany has been gun-shy since 1945) - are shrinking in size.
All that said, you cannot think of this in purely military terms. It is also a question of demographics, economics, diplomacy, geography and the balance of power. France, Germany and Russia are not natural allies and have historically built relationships to counter each other - those alliances shifting back and forth.
As to the USA, we have a larger economy and comparable armed forces and NATO serves our interests. By defending Ukraine we maintain the balance in NATO. Thus we find ourselves facing the Russians. (There have also been other periods of Russian-American rivalry. We too, are not natural friends.) - +1 y
@jordan156 You are romanticizing too much. Nations have interests. Loyalty is about serving those interests and right now, frankly, at least as far as Ukraine and Russia go, France is the more "loyal" ally.
Remember, these are the guiding principles of international relations:
From Lord Palmerston: "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow."
From Theodore Roosevelt: "World peace comes not from human kindness or moral restraint, but from balanced power; equilibriums of force restraining the selfish aims of nation-states."
From Camillo di Cavour: "Astonish them with my ingratitude." (His response when asked by a reporter what he would do for the Italian liberals who helped him unite Italy.)
Victor Davis Hanson (paraphrasing Thucydides): "Power, not justice... is always the final arbiter of state relations; self-interest, not morality, is what guides and must guide the behavior of states. Appeals to mercy or hope for reprieve are misguided, not rooted in logic or a realistic understanding of human behavior."
Oh, and from President John Quincy Adams: "Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be. But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own."
Look beyond the headlines to the history. To be sure culture and other factors can help to forge bonds - see also the USA-UK "special relationship." However, at the end of the day, the international arena is that - an arena.
- +1 y
@jordan156 Yup. France plays the game too. It is not one sided. Again, it is about interests, not sentiment.
Yet France was with the USA in Lebanon in the 80s. Sent troops to Afghanistan. Germany, by contrast, has been very reluctant.
Remember what Lord Ismay said about NATO? It's purpose was to "Keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down."
Germany is quiet about NATO because the lessons of history are such that a united Germany is highly destabilizing to Europe. (See 1914. See 1939.) So Germany has anchored its military security to NATO is a way that France has not.
Further, until the 1990s, Germany was divided. She could not afford to act too far out of NATO's ambit. Now that she is reunited, she is acting more independently. Hence, the pipeline with Russia that is causing so much controversy.
France is more openly critical of NATO - DeGualle famously pulled out of NATO's integrated military structure - but at times like the Cuban Missile Crisis, quietly during the debate over the deployment of Cruise Missiles and Pershing 2 missiles, and during Afghanistan, France sided with its interests - that is, with NATO. - +1 y
"If Germany is willing to side with Russia against Ukraine..."
Germany is a NATO member, one of the major ones. They're not going to side with Russia against the Ukraine, even if Putin were to threaten to cut off their energy supplies. The most likely scenario is they will remain neutral; they just won't want to have anything to do with it.
- +1 y
@Gal67 You are thinking in either/or's. It is more subtle than that.
Germany already has sided with Russia to some extent. It has banned the RAF from overflying German airspace. It has refused to allow the export of weapons through its territory to Ukraine. It has refused to shut down the Russian oil pipeline. It has refused to consult with President Biden on the Ukraine issue.
The situation is far more complex than you seem to understand. Particularly since reunification, Germany has seen NATO as a shield behind which it can begin to rebuild its interests in eastern Europe. It is also using this as a counterweight to French influence in the EU. (You may recall that France, not Germany, wanted the euro.)
To be sure, in a war between Russia and Ukraine, Germany will remain neutral. This thereby splitting an already very badly divided NATO, by the way. However, in the circumstance well short of war, the various powers - Germany, France, the UK, the USA and Russia - are playing out their historical strategic interests.
Finally, it is also worth adding that in the scenario you have drawn up, if there is a Russian attack on a NATO ally, German neutrality would violate the NATO treaty and shatter the alliance. - +1 y
You seem to think that maintaining a neutral stance is equivalent to aiding one of the sides in this conflict. If I don't support football team A, that doesn't therefore mean I support team B; that's a non sequitur fallacy.
Germany has nothing to gain from openly siding with Ukraine, and quite a lot to lose by opposing Russia, but since they're within the Western alliance the most logical and appropriate course of action is to simply stay out of it.
Almost half of Germany's energy requirements come from Russia, so their options are rather few. Germany needs to do what's best for Germany, not England or the United States, neither of which actually give a shit about Ukraine. - +1 y
"Finally, it is also worth adding that in the scenario you have drawn up, if there is a Russian attack on a NATO ally, German neutrality would violate the NATO treaty and shatter the alliance."
That's not going to happen though. This is (or at least it should be) purely between Russia and the Ukraine, and Ukraine isn't a NATO member.
- +1 y
@Gal67 On your last point, I agree. Most of what I have written, in fact, deals in circumstances well short of war. However, as I also noted, the risks of war by accident or error cannot be ruled out.
As to your point about neutrality. you seem to be under the impression that such neutrality will be viewed with pristine innocence. When in truth, you already have Poland and the Baltic states deeply concerned that any crisis where Germany stands aside will leave them hanging out to dry.
Further, you contradict yourself insofar as you acknowledge that German neutrality is NOT neutral insofar as Germany has nothing to gain from intervention in Ukraine. I fully agree with you and that is the point.
German neutrality benefits Germany but threatens Poland and the Baltic states by leaving them exposed to Russian aggression. It further divides NATO. It may also encourage China to act against Taiwan if it sees the West and the USA divided. It also effectively encourages Russia to act against Ukraine on the assumption that a divided NATO alliance will not be able to act in response. It also weakens the threat of US and other economic sanctions by undermining the impact of those sanctions.
The list goes on. Germany is pursuing its interests. That is to be expected and was my point. However, such pursuit is not consistent with that of other Western allies and its practical effect is to assure that Russia faces divided opposition in any move on Ukraine.

It's interesting with the Geneva Bible, I don't really read it all that much, but it has explanations of things, some are incorrect, but when it came to the 7 seals, they did acknowledge 5th seals opened in their lifetime because quite frankly, they were living in it and it's the same with the seal before it.
Anyways the corruption of today, as in the days of Noah will the coming of the son of man be and in the Old Testament it says people were only evil continually. People weren't evil continually in the past, people believed in God and its word even if it was an incomplete viewpoint. These days I'm seeing people practically breaking all 10 commandments and just about any other thing claiming they are Christian!
Yes, I think that this time war will break out, either via miscalculation or intent. 8,500 troops aren't much, they couldn't on their own stop (or even hinder) a major invasion of the Ukraine, but of course that deployment would only be the very first, and more would follow. I see this spiralling out of control, and I also see the Chinese using this as an opportunity to seize Taiwan.
I guess I should finally write my will, and I'll have to be sure I have a sufficient supply of pop-corn on hand.10 Reply- 6.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
+1 yYour question is not correct... the Pentagon has put US troops on "'heightened alert" as the US and its allies (ex:NATO) discuss whether to send more troops to Eastern Europe to counter Russia's threat along the Russia-Ukraine border.
Personally, I don't see a war happening, though there will probably be a lot of military "posturing" and "threats" on both sides. Ultimately, Ukraine will remain independent and will not become part of NATO (that would be a direct and unacceptable threat to Russia).01 Reply- +1 y
@AviatorTom We are both correct! I watched the news as the speaker for the Pentagon was informing us of what was happening. I read on the bottom of the screen in big red letters with quotation marks "Heightened Alert" then it changed after about 15 minutes to "Highest Alert" and that is why I said "Highest Alert". I thought it had gotten worse. That's when I decided to make this post.

+1 yA declaration of war is possible, but unlikely. This is pretty much just the US making a statement. It all depends on whether or not a US or Russian soldier in Ukraine gets jumpy. If one shoots the other, you can pretty much guarantee open war from then on until one party withdraws from Ukraine. After that, cold war is back on the menu. 90s nostalgia is going a little too far with that one.
Russia is going to keep doing this until the separatists and defectors take over the rest of Ukraine and hand the deed to Putin practically for free, just like Crimea. After that, tensions will ease up, then the worthless politicking resumes. The UN will keep not recognizing Russia's newly acquired territory as part of the Russian Federation, and Russia will continue having it anyway.
World War 3 will be fought with nuclear weapons. World War 4 will be fought with slings and spears. Such is the fate that rich old men have decided for you.00 Reply- 7.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.

S. is super soft right now. We don't have the ideological determination to go all out in a war. We also haven't promoted the right people in the military for decades. We mostly promote people who make good diplomats/political operatives instead of the people who are the best at getting things done. Other countries didn't make that mistake... one day the U. 01 Reply5.9K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. The U. S. is playing brinkmanship. It wants to take all of the former Ukraine away from Russia in order to rob Russia of it's primary, warm water naval base. It also wants to build military bases along all of Russia's borders. It's insane now the U. S. tries to characterize Russia's defensive moves as aggressive.
Historical fact: The Obama administration engineered a coup against the democratically elected Ukrainian government by actual swastika-saluting Nazis. Many Ukrainians, especially those in the east, were horrified. The new Ukrainian regime attempted a violent purge of those citizens who were Russian or who preferred a Russia alliance. But the U. S. doesn't care about human rights or democracy. It's only goal is world domination by any means necessary.

8500 troops forward deployed to a region is at the absolute most, only about 2,000 combat troops- and the US military tends to run closer to ~10% of soldiers being combat troops. Sounds a lot more like a security force to assist in evacuation or relief efforts to me.10 Reply

I had to laugh, I had forgotten, it's true, Europeans do think they are superior.

@Jersey2 what's frustrating and always has been its elites who always benefit from war, while everyday people just want to live a life of peace. In ww1 the Germans and English celebrated Christmas together only to go back killing each other the next day. American and Japanese troops met each other 60 years after ww2 and basically stated the same thing, they would rather have not seen and done the horrible things they did. They've just wanted to live a normal and peaceful life and raise families.

Russia has been massing troops on Ukraine's border the issue is, Russia doesn't want Ukraine to join NATO because that's enemies in their backyard and we won't guarantee them that we won't build missles if they do join NATO. So Russia say's either we drop Ukraine or they will attack so far over 100k troops are on the border, jets and tanks so now the US and NATO are taking an aggresive stance against Russia which could lead us to WW3.

The problem is real, there's a tension, but honestly I don't think any country have the balls to enter into a war unless it is ruled by a dictator
