Can someone explain the fascination with true crime?

I worked with felons for my career and never get it. Mostly What I see them getting worked up over is the murder of another human being. It seems awful to me what some people find entertaining

I have some fascination with some of those stories, like those of serial killers, but mainly out of interest to try to understand the darker side of humanity including my own darker side. I've always wanted to better understand the nature of human beings if only to help fight against it. Psychology would have been a field that would have interested me a lot as an alternative pursuit since there's nothing I find more complicated and more interesting than people.

History interests me as well for similar reasons, including and maybe especially the darker and more violent aspects of human history. It's not because I love violence. I might even hate it. But I want to understand it. Some people seem driven to try to understand things like where we come from or the origin of the universe. I was never particularly fascinated with those questions so much as ones like what causes human beings to act so horribly to each other.

Objection, your honor! I find the police procedural part interesting, the criminology, the forensics, the hunt for the perpetrator. I don't care to know too many gruesome details about the specific act.

That is actually a very good question and one that I would like to know the answer to myself.

If they don't act out, everyone has some weirdness. But I understand you. I have had cop friends and they think more like you.
