Why do so many people continue to want kids in 2022?

How could anyone between the ages of 18-30 want kids when most of us can barely afford rent (if even that) and our world continues to plunge into despair between the pandemic and world events?

Genetic reasons. Some people have stronger parental instincts than others and this is hereditary. These people will have children no matter what is happening.

Before modern times we had 50% child mortality, now reduced to almost 0. Disease and death from war was common, as it is in the animal world. People still had children. In fact in order that some of them would survive they had more children.

Now even those of us who don’t make a ton of money live more comfortable lives than kings of the past. In fact what you see is that the more rich a country becomes, the less people have children. In comparison to people of the past we live lives of luxury, to the point where according to some people if you’re not earning 6 figures you shouldn’t have children. We would not survive as a species if that were the case.

My rent is actually hella cheap compared to what it could be, I make far more than my state's minimum wage (especially with overtime... which is easy to come by since some of my coworkers are even lazier than I am and it's not like my job is even all that difficult), and my idea of a weekend is relatively cheap wine and some Youtube lmfao. I live within my means, but I can see that a LOT of people don't and then they go off and decide they want to add kids and even more expenses on top of the shit that they can't already afford.

Also, working hard does not always equate to upward mobility. Seniority and nepotism still come into play a lot. More often than not, it just leads to your employer trying to get you to do more work on the same wage or (maybe) with a couple cents increase and that applys to pretty much any job out there.

Our planet is already overpopulated and most of my generation can barely even afford the rent let alone the insane costs associated with having just one baby. It just baffles me as someone who just got their first apartment at 26 (partially thanks to not having kids- I could not afford to live on my own at my current job if I had a family). When I was single, I couldn't tell you how many times I'd be turned down just because I did not want kids. So often, a chat would be going super well until the subject came up and as soon as I explained myself... boom unmatched lol. Even my current partner said she almost swiped left on me because, despite being cute, the not wanting kids thing was a turn off. (She's beginning to see my side of things, but yeah)
