There's a growing possibility nuclear war could start at any second. It just takes one stupid tweet from a politician to piss off Putin and the mushrooms start popping up.
Kids aren't dumb, they hear the news, talk in the playground etc. So what are you telling them?

Unless Biden does something really stupid. the threat of nukes flying is less than likely. Russia attacked a non nuclear non NATO allied country. Nuking anyone for any reason would be suicidal for russia. When he anexed Chrimea he put his nuclear forces on high alert... we also did when we invade every contry we have invaded in the last 50 years. it is fairly standard practice.

tho in lue of the question. having the talk is pointless. Most of you will not survive the opening hours of a nuclear war. In the opening shots of a nuclear war. the first thing that will happen is most of the nukes going up will be targeting satellites trying to blind the enemy. this has the knock on effect of knocking ALL internet off line. the second round would likely come in the form of air bursting nukes for the EMP capability. one 12 kt nuke detonated at 30 thousand feet over Michigan would knock the the whole of the united states power grid and most electronics on the ground off line effectively ending modern civilization. now with most government completely blind to what the others are doing comes the actual attack. EVERY city in the USA with a air port will get nuked first and likely hit multiple times to insure B-52 bombers can not use them as staging areas for a counter strike then hubs of infrastructure and seats of important government to completely cripple a revenge war effort. this kind of exchange would kill 100 million people in the USA in the first HOUR. California would get hit the hardest due to its ample supply of military bases but every single state would see a rain of nukes because there are at least 2 or 3 major military installations in every state. by the end of the week most people would be dead dying or wishing they are dead.

I don't have any children so I can't talk about it, but even being aware of the level of international tensions, let's be careful not to be in the escalation.

Indeed, let's not forget that American and Western presidents to a certain extent have always found a way to maintain a dialogue with the ussr, which was much more armed and which murdered many more people than Putin's Russia.

Let's hope that Western leaders keep their cool, and their lucidity, as their predecessors did during the time of the ussr.

I don't have any children. Just nieces and nephews. I have explained to them the situation. I have explained that my friends have little children just like them. And that right now, they are in harm's way. I told them about why we, the U. S., can't go in and save them. Because Putin has nuclear weapons and has threatened to make our country the same wasteland he is making Ukraine into.

But I have explained, that Ukrainian people are giving the Russian military everything they can handle. And the world is doing everything it can to help.

Don't think duck and cover is going to work no matter what Biden says.
If bombs start falling the best your kids can hope for is a quick death rather than dying after days from burns after the flash, radiation sickness, radioactive fallout, tumours etc. Even if they survive the initial blasts they still have to survive nuclear winter, radioactive dust blown by the wind, acid rain, contaminated food and water, starvation, the end of law and order before dying probably of some form of cancer. Though the first thing I would do is take over one of those rich guy's bunkers

Nah. Putin won't use them. He's insane, but not stupid. If he did the retaliation would be fast and he wold not survive it. As it is, if he did then what is there to talk about? A bright flash of light and then you're gone.
When I was a kid we had the threat of nuclear war constantly so for people my age this is just old hat. No big deal.
They made us read a book in middle school called Alas Babylon about a nuclear war that was set in a fictional town, but the location given in the book was just about where we lived. It was a weird thing to do to kids.
"Hey listen, there's nothing you can do about it, but this what happens if someone on the other side of the planet decides to try to kill us" All it ended up doing was making us scared about a bogyman that never appeared.

I don’t have kids, but In my region they understand and relate to the destructive power of tornadoes more than they do nuclear attacks. Some have seen towns that look like the aftermath of Hiroshima after the a-bomb. Tornado warning drills are indistinguishable from nuclear attack drills in schools. No parent I’ve spoken with has mentioned having to have the nuclear talk with their kids yet, not that I know of.

Don't have kids luckily, but I wonder if we have anything to replace the 4 minute warning that we had during the cold war. Pretty sure I remember the alert system being retired in the early 90s. I guess it would be alerts on mibile phones these days.
