These polls are always kind of fake because how many people did they ask? At best maybe 5000-15000 out of their answers they try to predict the rates for the whole country. It´s not like in an election where nearly everyone can vote, here they use a minority to predict the majority.
This site lets you see how many people you have to ask to be almost certain your survey matches the general population to within a certain margin of error. It's a surprisingly small number for large populations. I don't know the maths, exactly, but you're working out the chance of being more than a certain percentage wrong, given a random sample of the population.

@t-8900 In DC, the gun laws were made less restrictive in 2012 and 2015. In 2011, the number of murders was already half the number of 2004, which was the first year it had dropped below 200 since 1986, with the peak at 482 in 1991.
In other words, the numbers of murders had been dropping steadily over decades. They increased in 2015, and are now back up to 200 a year.
Violent crime was also following a downward trend. (Both probably because of the removal of lead from fuel a generation or two ago, which reduced the number of kids growing up with it in their system en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead-crime_hypothesis .)
