Can people live without driving?

I'm 36 and I don't drive. I have my license (the written test), but when it comes to actually driving I find I have way to much anxiety and lack the focus. I get bus passes for each month and cab when I need to. Biking is another good way of getting around. I think it sort of depends where you live. I imagine some places may not be so easy to live if you don't drive. You don't have to worry about gas, insurance and maintenance. There are pros and cons to both. I think driving gives you more of a sense of independence and freedom to go wherever you want whenever. When you don't drive you're more Dependant on finding alternative forms of transportation that often are challenging to deal with.

It would be next to impossible here. Walking to the bus stop in sub zero temperatures, slipping on ice. The public transportation smells and is full of creeps and drunks. Taking lift is extremely expensive, it cost $15+ tip to ride a couple of miles to the repair shop the other day. Even if they improved public transportation where I live I’d still own a car because everything I do outdoors involves getting away from the city.

There is no public transportation here. Besides that the distances to walk would be to great. I could walk to work but it would take 2 hrs or more.

Car and oil companies bought out public transit and dismantled them, forcing people to drive. Large cities are where you’ll find people who’ve never driven.

Europe is full of non drivers. There’s trains and buses everywhere.

Imagine it? I've lived it! And yes, it does indeed suck, at least in some places. In, say, New York City, it's almost a plus, but in far suburban Chicagoland, it's awful.

I am 35 and never had my drivers license to this day, so i take the bus and walk where ever i need to go. Its really not that bad.

Isuppose you could if there was public transportation to get you to work and you didn;t mind walking everyplace and not being able to go hardly anywhere.

I don't drive. Mainly because I get driven everywhere I need.
