It could be a possibility… I think it’s more the way people are raised here. They have this entitlement to the rest of the world.. America is full of entitled spoiled brats from ages 5-95 that think they have a right to whatever they please. Between gender wars, to politics and Constitutional, to stake or claim of property this has always been the problem in America. The “west” isn’t all like that. You travel outside the country, there are only certain people that have that attitude. But most of the countries people that aren’t of a certain class are much better to be around.

No, it has a lot more to do with the huge emphasis on self-esteem that came from psychologists after WW2 and entered the mainstream in the 1970s. By the 80s parents really started indulging their children and by the 2000s a huge amount of risk aversion (plasticized playground surfaces instead of concrete or dirt, etc.) became part of parenting due to the low fertility rate in the West. This has led to all kinds of dysfunction.

Growing up today, you've to be the best & get treated as you are without any baring in it. It's about you first - you getting ahead, you succeeding.

Children are told they're unique, special - they're exceptional just the way they are, without being exceptional. That creates a shit load of people who think they're exceptional when they're barely mediocre.

More than one way to look at the this: Individualistic ideals are taught in the western society almost from the beginning. Always be the best, look good, be successful, earn lots etc
The other interpretation of an individual, is someone who has problems with social interaction. They have difficulty with criticism and are a bit awkward around others...

I don't think so. At least Western notions of individualism have been around for centuries and this degree of vanity and narcissism seems to taper off with older generations still brought up with those values and ideals.

I tend to think one factor is the shifting emphasis to helicopter parenting and treating children like they're so special along with technology which allows anyone interested enough to spend their time on social media to feel like a minor celebrity.

hmm interesting question... im sure it might. i think even more though is it contributes to isolationism and loneliness. It might be a contributor to the higher suicide rates these days.

I would say a mix of that social media people always feeling like that should have more because they worked hard which should directly translate into having ehat they see others have online

Individualism is more resistant to subversion than collectivism and it's not real narcissism but vanity. As example, Japanese society is very collectivist but their society suffers from same vanity and hedonistic pursuit like western societies.
Unfortunately a reset is sometimes necessary

Individualism encourages people to find out what they're really good/great at. You can know your better at certain things while not letting it go to your head. It even encourages immigrants to come here because they will probably be rewarded the best for their talents.

Individualism promotes responsibility. As if you are on your own; you have to worry about taking care of yourself. Collectivism actually promotes narcissism. I know it seems counter intuitive; but when society backstops your life choices, you can do things that are of self important. Instead of doing things that are self reliant.

I feel like that's only a thing in America, not in the West generally. In the UK narcissism is mostly limited to the "ruling elite".
