Trending & News No. The Ancient Romans enslaved whomever. Some slaves obviously had more value than others, as well as closeness to their masters—some slaves were multilingual and literate and taught the master’s children Greek for instance—but really it kind of came down to what role the master needed filled. Someone to labor in his fields? Fight in the gladiator pit? Build a wall on his property? Prepare his meals? Teach his children?
In light of this, it isn’t as if the Romans had a lot of African slaves. They had some, sure, but most of their slaves were from Italy, Gaul, various Frankish and Belgic tribes, places like that.
Nope..
They were the same as other slaves.
Racism of today is much more of a modern concept. In the ancient times they were more concerned with culture and civilization rather than skin color.
They just discriminated based on social status, religion, gender and whether or not you are actually Roman.
I think they were all in the same position. Namely if you were not a Roman citizen you were treated like of no value..
