Mitch is many things, few of them flattering but he is not an idiot. You dont survive in politics at the highest level for that long by making stupid decisions. He made the calculations before he said that and concluded that it was beneficial for himself if not the Republican Party. If you can't divine his motives the reasons is not because he is stupid but because you can't grasp what he is seeing.

He's playing with fire because he as most Republicans probably thinks that Biden was only elected because of manipulation so he's too sure of his win.
If Biden just won by manipulation then a win in the half-terms seems like a guarantee.
