The moment we started giving away money the economy was doomed. Every stimulus check just put a nail in the coffin. I think Obama knew it but really didn't see a choice as Covid had stalled the economy and Trump didn't get what he was doing it just made him popular so he kept the policy going and Biden is clueless. Now we're paying the price of free money.
The average American has an understanding of economics that's more-or-less based off of pizza coupons. This isn't actually the problem, however; THAT is that the average *economist* has an understanding of economics that's based off of what I can only assume are haruspicy readings.
I agree- but that won't solve anything. People today, in the US and probably everywhere, have what's not so much learned helplessness as DESIRED helplessness. See, if the situation's awful but there's nothing that can be done about it, then you don't have to feel awful for not doing anything about it; you can just say "that sucks" and go have a beer. Governments and corporations and all SORTS of other groups and individuals push the idea of "there's nothing you can do" on dozens of different issues, but it's mostly because they're asked to. The wicked get to to continue their wickedness, and the hoi-polloi don't have to feel guilty.
My father was red-green colorblind, which means that jungle-type camouflage didn't work on him; a bad thing when the Vietnam war is raging as you finish high school. He lucked out; it ended before he finished, but you'd think that would make an impression. My brother was turning 18 just as the Iraq war was gearing up to start, and figured Dad would support him in refusing to register; Dad didn't. Watching that argument was probably the scariest thing I've ever done, and the realization that my parents would have thrown ME under the bus just like they did him hit me like a runaway train. But it didn't matter- there was "nothing that could be done".
Eighteen years later, the case that would've killed the SS was being prepped to go before the Supreme court (when they agreed to hear it). Unfortunately, Marc Angelucci, the man leading the charge, was murdered, and then Biden took the White House and told the Court to not hear the case. You'd think that kind of progress would convince people that hopelessness was wrong, but when you tell them, they just get angry at you; they have a LOT invested in their own uselessness.
The problem is disinformation has a tight grip on rural areas. So what ~40% of the country "learns" is a false narrative that professional entertainers came up with to keep the US divided. Granted this is only expected to work in rural areas where much of civilized activity is so remote that it's possible to go through whole life times without being exposed to any conflicting realities, but a lot of people in cities who want to stay isolated are also prone to the messaging.
Yeah, right wing disinformation likes to say "something something Hollywood" a lot, but the simple fact is Hollywood doesn't pretend to be a news channel.
When you see Encanto or whatever you don't expect you are going to be told about real life events. But when you turn on fox news or Ben Shapiro, however, you do expect that - but when they get caught lying to you and you try to sue them in court they just claim they are entertainment and no reasonable person would take them seriously.
