Neither protest was an insurrection. An insurrection is an attempt to overthrow the government. The short-lived CHAZ autonomous zone in Seattle is an example of an actual insurrection. Of course, the powers that be ignored that and mislabeled and hyperventilated over the 1/6 protest for obvious reasons.
We had actual secessionists seizing territory during the summer riots, in some cases including federal government buildings... THAT is by far the best example of insurrection.
Both were serious breaches of security from protests that got out of hand. Insurrections are armed and very organized. These were not.

I agree that Assange and Snowdon (Manning, too) should not have been treated the way they have been. The incarceration rate is far too high, but I don't see any Republican plans to reduce it, do you? I do see them telling women what they're allowed to do with their bodies (and suggesting locking them up for making the "wrong" choice). They've also been the ones pushing the "war on drugs".
Yes, Democrats screwed up by voting for harsher sentences in the 1990's, but that was when violent crime had tripled or quadrupled over the last few decades. (It turns out the reason was probably lead in fuel, so the new generation had grown up without lead poisoning, leading to the crime rate dropping since then, but they couldn't have known that at the time.) How do you suggest they undo that, since they need Republican support?
Treating non-white people badly is also not terribly uncommon, but is improving. Judging today's government by the actions of governments two or three generations ago doesn't seem helpful. What are they doing today? (Other than Republicans trying to destroy the integrity of elections in the country and steal the presidency.)
