We've been in a cold ww3 for a while now. Authoritarians have put a lot of effort into making people tired of democracy so they will stop defending it and have largely been successful. Now authoritarians are really the only people with the backing of a people violent enough to stand up to other authoritarians. But as the bulk of authoritarians seem motivated only by controlling the oil and food so their own needs are secured, the threat that the world might be moving past our dependency on oil has united authoritarians worldwide in a way we've not seen before.
