Being that America is sitting on more untapped oil than any other country in the world, why are we buying oil from our enemies?

Joey said that the reason that gas costs me more than double of what it was under Trump, is because of Putin. Why were we even buying oil from Putin? How was this ever a good idea? Did we now learn a valuable lesson, or will we continue to set ourselves up for disaster?
One could argue that it's best to save our hundreds of years supply of oil for a rainy day. But if we're switching over electric cars next week, how does that make sense?

But as it stands, we're beholden to countries that hate us, in order to get the lifeblood of our economy. I don't get it.

We only ever bought very little oil from Russia, and not buying it now makes little difference on our domestic supply.

The thing is, though, that regardless of how much oil we produce, costs are determined by the global oil market, not only domestic. That is why oil prices have risen everywhere around the globe, not just in the US.

A lot of countries did buy oil from Russia, so with the absence of that supply on the world maket, there is greater demand for the oil produced elsewhere, including the US. As a result, all oil, everywhere, now costs more, because there is less global supply, even though global demand remains the same.

The fact that we produce as much oil as we do is why our prices are only around $5/gallon, while they are near/over $10/gallon in other parts of the world.

Those two points are completely independant of each other. Russian oil was still on the market during Trump's administration, so none of what I said above was a factor at the time.

Of course gas was cheaper without those effects in place.

If/when gas prices come back down, then I'll be happy about it, regardless of who it happens under. Biden, Trump, Desantis, etc; it doesn't really matter who is president at the time.

Gas was $0.78 at the end of Clinton's term, and the beginning on Bush Jr's, and the president at the time didn't make any difference, then, either. I'm not rooting for either of them to come back, because the President doesn't have a whole lot of direct impact on gas prices.

You asked a question, and I answered it, but you seem to be under the impression that I'm defending Biden, or attacking Trump. I am doing neither. I simply pointed out one of the things that's currently affecting the price of gas. That's all.

If someone else was currently President, be it Trump, Sanders, Pence, whomever, and the world conditions were the same, my answer would not have changed.

It doesn't work that way. There is no "we". It's individual companies that buy on the world market. US companies buy oil from over a 100 different countries. It's a world wide commodity with prices reflecting worldwide supply and demand. The exact source of the oil is not all that relevant.

The biggest source of US oil is the US itself. The next largest source is Canada. The majority of US oil come from those two countries. Mexico is typically the third largest source. The rest of US bound oil comes from the rest of the world with smaller amounts split between many different countries.

Oil prices have always been highly volatile. There are major swings in prices. After accounting for inflation, gas prices are not even all that high now. People have just gotten spoiled by low prices. Current prices WILL go back down, and it probably won't take long.
