Hyenas are dominated by the female. They run on a matriarch.
Plenty of other examples of this in the animal kingdom.
Males and females also have different levels of hormones that dictate behavior.

Chickens peck the shit out of each other for no reasons... I've never seen males peck females, while females kill both males and females just because they didn't like them.
