No, I don't prison incarceration is comparable with Jim Crow, American apartheid and slavery. I could be in a car crash and have permanent brain damage with part of my skull exposed and the top part of my brain visible with the naked eye and still not be that retarded.

If my interpretation of what she was saying is correct, then yes, I agree with her.
A different interpretation might be that the prison system is designed with the goal of suppressing black people, which I would not agree with. It is certainly indifferent to their plight though.
Consider the stereotypical black teenage gang member who murders someone. You might well say "they're a monster, and they deserve to rot in jail". You could also approach it with the view that nobody deserves to be locked up in jail. Noone is born a violent criminal, and if they end up as one, it is because society has failed them in some way. I'm not a violent criminal, and hopefully neither are you, so what makes them different? And of course, when you look into it, the links between poverty and crime (and race) are undeniable.
My interpretation is that she doesn't like people in prisons. But like her and the rest of the squad, they always throw in racism. It doesn't matter what the topic is they got to throw that in there. Should have just talked about how she doesn't like people in prison of any color.
I work in a prison work release. If you have the access to the database I do you might think differently.
I know a guy who is due to release in a few days, so I asked him what his plans were when she got out. He told me his plan is to go back to prison. I asked him why he wanted to go back to prison. He said it's because it's where I belong. So he released even though he didn't want to and a month later he cut his girlfriend's head off. So ALC can talk about the definition of dehumanizing, but she's never had her head cut off. That's fairly dehumanizing.
I don't agree with her. I believe other countries probably have penal systems better than ours, but that our system is along the lines of slavery, that's just foolishness.
Moreover, I don't believe that the slaves themselves, people who had zero hope of being free, who were beaten severely for not working well, who could be bought and sold at will, and who were *born* into that situation or kidnapped and taken off to slavery, all without any due process, would agree at all that rapists, murderers, thieves, arsonists, batterers, and other prisoners, who are where they are as the result of due process, are suffering a fate as terrible and unjust as theirs. I don't believe they would agree with her at all.

The sad thing is she said this back in 2019, and one would think that after a couple years in Congress that she'd have a less childish view of the world. One would also think somebody with the mindset of incarceration being an overused punishment wouldn't be such a fangirl for Kamala Harris, who's only noteworthy contribution to politics is basically keeping people incarcerated longer than necessary in order to be used as forced labor for the state.
There's certain late night show hosts who pretend to get starry-eyed at the idea of AOC running for president, but then she'd actually have to debate people smarter than her (most), and it would end her political career. No, she's going to be the next Pelosi who spends 40 years in Congress because she won't ever win an election outside of her own district.

A jail term is not slavery; it's punishment. Some social groups may be more represented but that is because they are doing more crimes not some apartheid policy. Not sure what Jim Crow is but think it is unequal legal treatment. Nope. Same laws.
It’s not unusual for politicians to express themselves using hyperbole. In that sense, the comparison is fair, in my opinion. But even a cursory examination of the facts quickly reveals that the US prison system is none of what she claims. There ARE whites in every US prison, therefore Jim Crow and apartheid do not apply. Full stop.
The comparison to slavery is more nuanced, but i still think it’s generally hyperbolic. In the sense that there certainly some people in prison who should not be there and they are forced into manual labor for someone else’s benefit, there definitely is slavery in US prisons. However, in that the vast majority of inmates do deserve to be in prison, and upon going to prison we know we are relinquishing MANY rights afforded to law-abiding citizens, the expectation that we might still have autonomy over our own physical labors in prison is absurd by any reasonable standard. But i had stopped expecting the left to be reasonable long ago.

If young black and Hispanic males commit a hugely disproportionate percentage of the violent crime, they will be incarcerated at a disproportionate rate.
On the other hand, they are incarcerated disproportionately for non-violent, victimless crimes. Blacks and whites use marijuana at equal rates and very few middle class whites are in prison for non violent drug possession. (I don’t thing anyone should be for marijuana.)
Similarly, I don’t see why prostitution is a crime with no minors involved. Pimping, however, should carry the death penalty.
There's no doubt we've created an industrial prision complex but it's not apartheid, Jim crow, slavery or the holocaust. What it is, is a stand alone issue of it its own, a major soceital problem in America that feeds into itself. Hoe to solve it is the problem. Politicians will talk about the problem but have no real intention of solving it as it has become a huge industry in itself.

Nope, it is probably terrible, what I would say is it's not very effective. I watched a documentary the other day and it stated that prison populations are so crowded that some convicts that are serving 2 year sentences get out in about 10 days, the prison system also has zero percent chance of reforming criminals. This is California, so not sure what's going on in the rest of the country.
I work in a prison work release, and it's not zero percent chance of reforming, it's more like a 2% chance of reforming. That's dismal, but most of the prisoners love being there. It's the only way for them to get the monkey off their back. (no offense. lol) They seriously love the easy prison life.
One guy I work with asked a prisoner what it's like to be in society. (Where I work they can hold jobs, and go on approved shopping passes) The prisoner got very angry and said: "Prison is a society, it's just different than your society.
I was talking to another prisoner, and I was mad that he didn't finish his sanction hours. (he did something bad, so I made him spend extra time cleaning)
I said to him that if he didn't finish his two sanction hours, I was going to keep in prison for three extra months. (he was due to release in two days)(my threat was a joke, and he knew that)
I'll never forget what he said, and I just wish that the people on this site could understand this...

I tried to do some reading on PREA, at first glance I think that legislation has its place, I don't believe sexual misconduct in corrections facilities should be taken lightly, unfortunately if it was consenting, that is hard to be proven, as for Christmas dinner, I hope you guys get penalty rates for working holidays, I don't care too much about if incarcerated persons get a special meal once a year. You guys get to go home at the end of your shift.

Poor countries in Africa couldn't afford a prison system like other wealthier countries so they enslaved people that broke laws instead. They then began the practice of selling slaves for profit to countries like America. So slaves were actually Criminals/Prisoners.
