Can you imagine what growing up in a racist home must feel like?

It's more like a bunker mentality, like everyone outside is scary and it's hard to know who to trust. But it can be simple to figure out who to not trust if you use your eyes. Other white people can get mad if you don't trust them and that could lead to conflict. But if a brown person gets mad about not being trusted you can assume there will be no consequences for anyone you're supposed to care about if you feel threatened and call the cops.

But even that is a little extreme. Poverty is the driving force behind racism. And the racism of poor white people is downright baffling. Survivors of the great depression have made the observation that rich people encouraging racial divides among the poor is how the great depression managed to go on as long as it did. There is a mix of elements:
1. Black people are part of the community.
2. White people are statistically supposed to be doing better than black people.
3. White people are not supposed to be doing statistically better than black people.
4. Statistics mean very little at the individual level but the understanding that white people are supposed to be doing better makes those white people who are not doing better feel inadequate.
5. When people (white or black) feel inadequate they look for someone besides themselves to blame and so the right wing infotainment telling them about government handouts to brown people paid by taxes on the white man seems much more provocative.

In so many words it's a bit of a rat race thanks to a handful of people setting themselves up as the gatekeepers of the benefits of civilization. This makes people desperate. Desperate people get competitive. Competitive people are focused on excuses to win, not the plight of the person they defeat.

I was raised by people like that. Well aware that racism was unacceptable in theory but found themselves unable to resist the temptation in practice.

If you grew up in a racist home I’m sure your parents weren’t racist to you, since y’all would be the same race. So I’m guessing it would be pretty normal.
