Well, I'd wager that many, if not most, of them have some degree of Arab ancestry (you get that when you live near each other), the latest genetic stuff I've read says that they're descended from other Middle Eastern peoples. I think the Hittites are the most popular candidate. But given how you had SO much travel through that part of Asia for SUCH a long time (until the Suez canal opened, really), I doubt there's much by way of "genetic purity" among them.

Most Turks are from Armenian or Greek (Byzantium, Athens, Rhodes, etc.) bloodlines. Anatolia was conquered by people from the Asian Steppe. What comes to mind is the Golden Horde... The conquered people were then converted religiously and culturally. Genetically though, they are still mostly Greeks or Armenians. A minority power of war lords assert military dominance over the majority.

They have no recollection of their own history or culture. Subjugated people get converted over a couple generations. They integrate into the new culture and leave the old culture behind. As an example, there are Blacks in the US military, that have deployed to places like Somalia and Niger that fight other Blacks out of their own free will. They have no connection to the culture in Somalia, because they have become Americans and that is where their loyalty stands.

Turkish people are not Arabs. Turks and Arabs are not the same ethnicity. Turkish people are descendants of Central Asian Turkic people and indigenous people of Anatolia. Arabs are Semitic people of the Middle East.

Turkey has been a crossroad of the world forever, though. So there are a lot of different ethnicities and ethnic mixes in Turkey.
