I've always believed that if a person didn't mean what they said about another person they wouldn't have said it in the first place? Thoughts?

For context I mean being really mean to someone behind their back and to their face and years later they look completely different so all that's in the past right? 🙃

Part of then meant it at that Moment for sure. The motivation is important too. The tone whether sarcastic or hateful or sincere. This is why texting and email SUCK... one can't really tell what's going on. Do you have context or Example?
