Do people from your highschool unfairly hate on their hometown?

Do people you went to highschool with unfairly hate the hometown of the school? I assume it's because they want to move on to somewhere new and leave the old behind.

My hometown has been turned into a sewer. When I tell people where I grew up they look at me funny. It really was not a bad town 30 years ago. I do not thing anyone I knew growing up still lives there. There are gang shootings and murders on a regular basis. I would not blame anyone for hating the place.
