Does cosigning for an apartment affect your credit?

I am trying to get my parents to help cosign for my first apartment because I make just under the 3x income requirement. They are hesitant because they think it will hurt their credit and they are trying to buy a new car soon. My second question is: will the leasing agent share with them how much my income actually is? I make more than enough to cover my monthly rent and all expenses with about 600 left over for savings, but I kinda had to stretch what I told them I made otherwise I wouldn't have been able to move out on my own. They think I am making 50k, but I am actually starting out at 40k. Will the leasing office just have them sign a co sign form, or will they actually share a form that shows my income on it?

It does affect credit because the lenders will see they have taken on the financial responsibility of another person if that person happens to default on the loan.
