What are some ways to cleanse ocean water to water plants?

The ocean water is in the USA and quite dirty and polluted. What methods could be used to cleanse and purify the water to be used to water plants? Preferably as simple as possible. The cost is not an issue.

I might be able to help.

1. Distillation by heat, solar evaporation works well.

2. "Distillation by descent" : take one container of fresh water and one of marine, place a porous bridge (can be a clean piece of fabric, even), wet it thoroughly in the fresh water. place one end in the higher container of marine water , the other in the lower container of fresh water. Bridge or piece of fabric should be fairly long to prevent "salts creep".

3. Electrically precipitate the minerals and contaminates from the water.

4. Use "electro-osmosis" (basically combines "3' with a semi-porous diaphragm.)

Problem "B" solution: electrical power to achieve above.

1. use a wave-based generator system to supply your electrical power for electrically treating water or powering heaters to effect distillation.

2. Station your desalination plant at the mouth of a river. Use said river to power simple water-wheel to turn a generator to effect the same as B-1.

Desalination is not a money issue - it's a resource issue.

The Arabs have water desalination capabilities second to none. But moving that much water and processing it isn't something you build overnight.

Even the Romans took decades to build their aqueducts and they used slave labour.

Ocean water is a poor choice as it is very "heavy" with microorganisms, salt and minerals. You are far better using grey water instead or building rain reservoirs to recycle water.

If that was feasible every coastal town around the world would be doing it. The standard way would be through distillation but the energy costs would be prohibitive. Solar distillery could be an option as used in sea salt factories but it's very slow and wouldn't yield enough water.

The main issue with ocean water is its salt content. That can kill most plants. To get rid of the salt, distill the water... boil it and collect the steam for watering the plants. That will also get rid of many (but not all) pollutants.

a recent Nobel prize or something was given to a guy who has a way. It is tough. Especially when oil pipelines leak or explode. Thats why we have moratoriums or limits on oil pipelines, people.

Reverse osmosis is really the best way to do it but it is rather expensive.

I'm going to develop a large business for a property in a drought plagued area. It's going to require a lot of water use because of plants and other factors. They limit the water use permitted in that location. So I don't want to limit the amount of water I am able to use for the business.

About 1/2 an acre worth of trees and plants. From small plants to 30 foot trees.

The quickest way is to boil a large container of salt water then collect the steam in a copper cooling pipes. But it takes fire wood and lots of energy to do so. There are solar setups that do the same thing but less water per day. It's not an eficant process any way you do it
