Why is being an a**hole a common trait in conservative parents?

Mine don't believe kids should even talk or think about food after they are full. My brother who is in his pre-teens has many selfish traits and rarely smiles.

Well... Lets just say that the traditional way to raise children (which dont really have a long history either) leaves much to be desired. Furthermore, this problem is compounded by things like looking down on the younger generations because they "have it too easy" or whatever with the whole "Back in my day" spiel.

Then to this we add stuff like the conservative backlash from outlawing corporal punishment, "liberal" views on raising children such as positive reinforcement and the conservatives natural desire to try shape their children into copies of themselves which includes their own beliefs and goals they wish they had accomplished as children. All of these things just reinforces bad parental behavior to a higher extreme.

Onto this we can add the current circumstances. The failing education system in USA giving children a hard time which is made worse by parents believing this is from them not trying hard enough. The failing economy which means that the parents are usually in a worse economic situation and the children achieve a lower economic situation after growing up AKA all those millennials still living with their parents because the housing market and job market is fuckt. And last but not least, a lot of conservative parents became parents without really being prepared or meaning to. Rather than naturally forming a relationship and deciding upon starting a family together they were often younger with all that entails, got married for religious reasons because its "the right thing to do when together" and perhaps worst of all accidentally conceived a child through bad understanding of contraception.

To put it bluntly, American conservatives just tends to be bad parents.

Look mate, if you are going to be an effective parent, you will have to find disciplinary methods which work for your unique children, not dogmas which claim that all children are the same.

I, one male out of 3 billion on earth right now, have the 'liberal child' make up, in that not since birth did I ever respond to violence or negativity, whereas I was uniquely responsive to carrots, encouragement and support.

However, if there are other children on earth who DO respond to the stick and who become lazy and arrogant when praised and encouraged, maybe they would need a different kind of parenting?

You have bigger challenges as parents if one of your children responds to the carrot whereas the other responds to the stick. You will never be able to be consistent in actions, even if you seek to be consistent in outcomes.

@rtj1211 The science behind how to raise a child is very extensive and been shown to work. According to that they say physical discipline do not work even slightly and instead only causes developmental issues for the child. This is not even debatable, hitting a child will only give negative results.

I am a conservative, and an actual one at that, and I am 100% against corporal punishment from either parents or teachers. Today's "conservatives" are either neocons (which are basically a mix of Stalinists and fascists), MAGA alt-righters (who hate gay people, trans people, and sometimes even Black people), or narcissistic/manipulative libertarians. No in-between.

This is why I am planning on homeschooling my future kids. Public and private schools both are frauds, "funding" and "vouchers" are two sides of THE SAME COIN..

That is so not true. It's the other way around. Conservative parents are more caring, they are better at knowing how to raise kids who will turn into adults faster and be more successful in finding love and spreading happiness to the next generation. Liberal parents on the other hand teach their children that the world is against them, that violent protests and activism are the only ways to succeed, that having a good family connection is not important, and that there is no such thing as nature. I grew up in a conservative family and feel very lucky for that.

It seems like almost every conservative I talk to is crazy. I am a conservative too, but I cannot stand modern (Reagan and later) conservatism when that bullshit "satanic panic" came out...

Nothing is wrong with Conservative parents. My parents were Conservative. Did you ever consider that they are Conservative because they feel Conservatism offers a guide for the family to follow?
