Why does time seem to pass by faster as we get older?

I remember just 9 months ago, Betty White passed away, and now Queen Elizabeth's passed away. These 9 months flew by in a blink of an eye. I'm 20 now, and I remember when I was 11, it felt like forever waiting 9 months from the beginning to the end of the school year.

I think what @TroyDT says is part of the answer: As we get older, each year is a smaller % of our total life, so seems more compressed. But the other thing is that as you get older you get better at knowing what is and what isn't important to remember so your mind is better at skipping over the boring stuff.

I think it's a plus. If I spend all day doing something, at the end of the day it doesn't feel like it was all day but I still remember the fun bits. Versus when I was younger, i would probably have felt bored 50% of that time and I would remember being bored. Now I only remember the positive side mostly.

But the answer to your question: yes, it sure seems that way. Might be a relativity thing, like 5 years is 50% of your existence at age 10, but at 30 it’s only a third of your existence, 10% at 50, and so forth. Not much you can do besides make the most of your days and nights while they’re in the present👍

I know right. I don't know to me I believe it's because when we're kids we have a lot of downtime after school when we get home to spend with family, friends, enjoy ourselves then when we graduate go off to college, get a job, do all of these things that take up majority of our days, we're like what the fuck? Where did my day go? And it's like 11pm or something! No for reals I agree its going by so fast. I feel like i was just 21 and my 24th birthday is next month! Just make the most of each moment and dont be afraid to take a break and enjoy yourself with great people :)

I’d say because at a young age we don’t have much responsibility so we can sleep all day, eat, play video games. Plus waiting “forever” to finally get the hell out of school seems to make it even longer. But as you get older your day is usually just filled w responsibilities so time flies quick cause you’re trying to take care of all these things. Like work. I work 12 hour days, go home, sleep then come back. Younger people say older people go to sleep early, probably because we’re so busy w everything that needs to be done that it drains you. Unlike a lot of younger people who I mentioned before don’t have much responsibility. When you’re still living w your parents you don’t have much to be responsible for like bills, so no need to really go to sleep early to get up for a job.

I think it's just because we're aware of it. When you're a kid, you don't care much about time. Also because, AS an adult, you just don't have that much of it. You have to deal with work, school, your kids, house work, etc., and you have VERY LITTLE time to just play, like you did when you were a kid!
