Yes, they can.

Advantage: none, because they would qualify for free representation.

Disadvantage: likely unfamiliar with the law and/or the rules of the court.

Unless they were previously a lawyer…. No one assumes that do they.
Having a ‘friend of a friend’ who knows one such person, I thought it was a good idea to respond. People become disillusioned with the system and life, and make a conscious decision to give it all up. Family included.
