In case you didn't know Self-Made Man is a book about a study where a feminist woman decided to be a man for 18 months, which led to her needing treatment in 3 different mental institutions due to the mental trauma she endured as a man.

Bonus info: The author of the book "self made man" became a misogynist and lost all respect for women after she experience the way they acted and treated the average male first hand.

I don't think Vincent ever really got into all that detail as to why she got severely depressed enough to go to the mental hospital after that whole experiment. I think she did mention that gender identity is something you mess with at your own peril. Probably implying that female brains aren't typically meant to handle the life of the average man and vice versa.

This experiment really opened up a pretty big can of worms.

It certainly seems like it. Every woman I’ve ever met who gets a look at what life is like for men has told me the same thing; “I had no idea how much shit men put up with…”

Maybe she was crazy to begin with? She clearly had some gender dysphoria issues.
