Discuss and Debate: Should the death penalty replace a life sentence?

Discuss the pros and cons of each.
Eg. Prisoners serving a life sentence should NOT be served the death penalty as that would end their suffering prematurely.

There is no justification for the death penalty. There are a few reasons why ranging from not having the government be in the business of killing their own citizens but more importantly, the inability to guarantee that no innocent people would ever be executed. Because we can never be certain that they are guilty we can never actually justify executing someone.

Yes... Now imagine someone can torture and murder people and they know that in the worst case scenario.. They won't be physically touched... They get to live and breathe and die normally on a hospital bed... would that make them fear anything? People in the old times were pretty savage but they did one thing right... Punishments were as bad as the crimes

I don't think most murderers presume they will be caught. Otherwise even a life sentence seems like a pretty bad deal in return for whatever brief satisfaction they're getting for snuffing out a life.

The death sentence leaves no place for error find out 20 years later someone lied or faked evidence and you can't do anything anymore with life sentences you can at least release them again

No, as a "life" sentence does not always mean "in prison for your natural life". People are often given life sentences with possibility for parole after xx amount of years.

I support the death penalty but it has to be for the right person and right crime.

A death sentence for murder delivers more justice, but should the state be in the business of killing people if it wants to dissuade citizens from killing people?

Perfect justice also just seems like an unattainable ideal.

Yes, it is always a possibility that some liberal judge will ride into town and say that the guy is just misunderstood and the family he murdered really had it coming. He or She will let the murderer out before serving the rest of his life sentence.

I’m not giving my own opinion, I’m simply asking for everyone else’s. And of course I mean those that have been PROVEN - eg, rape where bodily fluids have been detected or terrorist masterminds

Capital punishment should only be used in the worst cases of murder, like killing multiple people, or mass rape.
