Do you think the attempt to challenge an asteroid' trajectory was a worthwhile effort?

Was the results satisfactory? This asteroid was big, and the little dart sent against Goliath did damage but did it do any good at changing it's course? I think we're going to need a bigger boat. What about the cost? With a looming recession moving in, was the expense smart?

this was very much worth, yes...

to the smart people though...

for those who know better about the science of it... this is just one of a series of tests and experiments that need to be done in order to learn about the best and better ways to deal with these (and other types) of space rocks

now, for the average and casual person... that's up for them to decide if it was worth their whatever... lol

I guess I can see that but they just needed something that could do something, and not just irritate it like a mosquito.

well, that was a "double object" so maybe... they were theorizing about disrupting the smaller of the two, and perhaps that would be enough to later disturb the larger one, as if they were a duo... now if that had been enough, it would have saved effort and resources so yes... start betting slow and little first

but who knows, I have actually not looked into any details

Sooner or later, there's going to be an asteroid that threatens to hit Earth, it's inevitable. This DART mission was a good first step in seeing what it would take to nudge a "killer asteroid" off course so that it misses Earth. It will be several days before scientists determine how successful DARTA was. in changing the asteroid's orbit. It did prove successful in being able to target, and hit, an asteroid millions of miles from Earth.

It was useful research. I'd rather they get a bit practice in now and iron out mistakes rather than try and wing it when we are in danger.

What is the cost of humanity if an asteroid was to hit earth? And it only needed to move it a little bit. Then they could calculate the distance they would have to hit one to move it enough to keep it from hitting earth and how far out they would have to do it.

Yes, absolutely!! It's long overdue, like as experiment it needed to be tried, to at least give us some feedback on whether or not such a method is a future option.

Not really. With just pushing something a few m or cm—in space—, you can significantly make it change its trajectory.
