why is our tax money going to space exploration when we have an unstable border, unaddressed mental health issues, poverty, and crumbling infrastructure? When did tax payers agree to fund things that won't be a direct benefit to them? Why would they?
I was hella shocked to see the poll
@DizzyDesii me too! How many complain about domestic issues not getting enough funding? But then its okay to spend billions on NOT helping fix those problems? Hmmm
The reason for those confused could be, barely any money spent on it and the rate of return seems reasonable. (A lot of things exist because and as a result of research) for example nasa has a budget of about ≈20b dollars which accounts for 0.48% of us spendings.
@sensible27 could 20 billion help solve world hunger? Perspective maybe I guess. It could certainly take care of a lot of the issues facing this country tbh.
As far as I understand world hunger is more a logistics issue than a food issue. We produce enough food to feed the population one and half times over or so
Secondly, the estimates put solving world hunger at around 300 billion or so per year. So no, maybe not. Recently (some time ago) the director un food scarcity organization said 2% of elon musks wealth could solve world hunger, he offered to liquidate the stocks if they could provide a plan but I'm not sure anything has come out of it.
Right so why do my tax dollars go to space exploration while I struggle to pay off medical bills again? Idc about space. Why take my money for that rather than healthcare reform? As much as I don't like so much going to the military I also want every advantage over China and Russia possible tyvm
Oh wait they do but that's good. Gov shouldn't be responsible for paying for your food, just for health care. As far as mental issues goes they could do both. US gov has money don't let them fool you. As far as infrastructure goes our taxes goes to all those things including health care but our gov steals those taxes and fucks us over.
World Hunger is also a major concern. Govt should fund money to stop world hunger.
Nope we got mfs starving and shit. We need to take care of the earth before we worry about space

just a few of the things we use down here on earth, that came from space exploration development (got the list from the webs)
1. Artificial limbs
Innovations originally designed for space vehicles, including artificial muscle systems, robotic sensors, diamond-joint coatings, and temper foam, make artificial human limbs more functional, durable, comfortable and life-like.
2. Scratch-resistant lenses
After NASA developed scratch-resistant astronaut helmets, the agency gave a license to Foster-Grant Corporation to continue experimenting with scratch-resistant plastics, which now comprise most sunglasses and prescription lenses.
3. Insulin pump
Needing to monitor astronauts' vital signs in space, the Goddard Space Flight Center created monitoring systems that have been adapted to regulate blood sugar levels and release insulin as needed.
4. Firefighting equipment
The polymers created for use in space suits have been valuable in creating flame-retardant, heat-resistant suits for firefighters. Newer suits also feature circulating coolant to keep firefighters from succumbing to heat and advanced breathing systems modeled after astronaut life support systems.
5. DustBusters
During the Apollo moon landings, NASA partnered with Black & Decker to invent various battery-powered tools for drilling and taking rock samples in space. This led to the creation of the ultra-light, compact, cordless DustBuster.
6. LASIK
Technology used to track astronauts' eyes during periods in space in order to assess how humans' frames of reference are affected by weightlessness has become essential for use during LASIK surgery. The device tracks a patient's eye positions for the surgeon.
7. Shock absorbers for buildings
Shock absorbers designed to protect equipment during space shuttle launches are now used to protect bridges and buildings in areas prone to earthquakes.
8. Solar cells
Out of a need to power space missions, NASA has invented, and consistently improved, photovoltaic cells, sharing the advancements with other companies to accelerate the technology.
9. Water filtration
In the 1970s, NASA developed filtration systems that utilized iodine and cartridge filters to ensure that astronauts had access to safe, tasteless water. This filtering technology is now standard.
10. Better tires
After the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company invented the material used in NASA's Viking Lander parachute shrouds, the company began using it in its everyday radial tires. The material is stronger than steel and adds thousands of miles of life to the tires.
11. Wireless headsets
Along with two airline pilots who'd invented a prototype of a wireless headset, NASA built a light, hands-free communication system that would allow astronauts to communicate with teams on Earth. The technology was utilized in the Mercury and Apollo missions.
12. Adjustable smoke detector
In partnership with the Honeywell Corporation, NASA improved smoke detector technology in the 1970s, creating a unit with adjustable sensitivity to avoid constant false alarms.
13. Invisible braces
After NASA and Ceradyne invented a clear material that could protect radar equipment without blocking the radar's signal, Unitek Corporation/3M teamed up with Ceradyne, using the material to invent invisible braces.
14. Freeze-dried foods
During long space missions where every ounce of weight and inch of space aboard a shuttle must be maximized, freeze-dried foods have become a staple. Freeze-dried foods are incredibly light, and they retain their nutritional value. Once reconstituted, they are also easier and more pleasant to eat than former meal sources that were packed into squeeze tubes.
15. Camera phones
In the 1990s, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory invented a light, miniature imaging system that required little energy in order to take high quality photographs from space. This technology has become standard in cell phone and computer cameras.
16. CAT scans
NASA's digital signal technology, originally used to recreate images of the moon during the Apollo missions, is the underlying technology that makes CAT scans and MRIs possible.
17. Baby formula
A nutritious, algae-based vegetable oil invented by NASA scientists who were searching for a recycling agent to use during long space missions is now an additive in many infant formulas. It contains two essential fatty acids that cannot be synthesized by the human body.
18. Lifeshears
The pyrotechnic mechanism used to detach a space shuttle from its rocket boosters after launch is the same used in Lifeshears, but in a smaller scale. Lifeshears are a tool that can be used in emergency situations to cut into cars or collapsed buildings to rescue people trapped inside.
19. Grooved pavement
The requirements for landing space shuttles led NASA scientists to do extensive research on minimizing hydroplaning – when vehicles slide uncontrollably on a wet surface – on runways. They discovered that cutting grooves into runways helps channel water away from the runway and significantly reduces accidents. Many highways and airports now have grooved pavement.
20. Air purifier
In the sealed, artificial environment of a spacecraft, attempts to grow plants have led to ethylene buildup. NASA invented an air purifier for the International Space Station that is now used widely on Earth – everywhere from restaurants, to hospitals, to refrigerators – to remove ethylene, which hastens decay, as well as other particulates and pathogens.
21. Memory foam
Memory foam was originally invented as a pad for astronaut seats that would mold to their bodies during the high forces of takeoff and landing, then return to a neutral state. This eliminated the need to customize seats to individual astronauts' body sizes.
22. Workout machines
Because prolonged exposure to zero-gravity leads to bone loss and muscle atrophy, NASA created workout machines to enable astronauts to maintain physical fitness while in space.
23. Home insulation
NASA began experimenting with insulation technology for the Apollo space crafts and suits, leading to the invention of common construction insulation.
24. Infrared ear thermometers
Infrared ear thermometers, which allow for instant temperature capture without the risk of picking up pathogens and causing cross-infection, utilize the same technology developed for assessing the temperature of distant planets.
25. Ice-resistant airplanes
Ice is a real threat for shuttles in space, and NASA has devised multiple electronic solutions to prevent ice formation on spacecrafts, some of which are now used on commercial aircraft.
26. Portable computer
The first portable computer, the Grid Compass, was used on multiple shuttle missions in the 1980s. Nicknamed SPOC (Shuttle Portable On-Board Computer), the computer could communicate with onboard devices and was used to launch satellites off space shuttles.
27. LEDs
Intended for use to help in growing plants aboard space shuttles, NASA's LED technology has been utilized in the development of LED medical devices that relax muscles and relieve pain in soldiers, cancer patients, and those with Parkinson's disease.
28. 3D food printing
The ability to cook food on long space missions is no longer impossible with the invention of 3D food printers. This technology is now being refined for commercial use for the production of chocolates and other confections as well as to create nutritious foods for diabetics and others with specific dietary needs.
29. Computer mouse
While searching for a way to increase interaction with onboard computers and allow users to perform tasks like manipulate data, NASA and Stanford researchers developed the first mouse.
30. Athletic shoes
A shock-absorbent rubber molding designed for astronauts' helmets inspired what is now a common feature in the soles of modern athletic shoes.
@exitseven baby formula was one I didn't know about
This was a bit of fascinating information I didn’t know, thanks for sharing!
Yes, because the more we understand about reality around us the more likely we eventually learn to invent new technologies, such as cleaner and safer energy.
NASA tracks this stuff, and it is presently believed that every $1 they spend on space technology leads to at least a $2 boost to the U. S. economy.
The Hubble telescope lead to the discovery of Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and Dark Flow. Even though we don't know exactly what those things are just yet, it means up to three fundamental forces of the Universe were discovered by a single space telescope.
I personally believe and know Dark Energy to be evidence of the on-going Creation of the Universe by The True Creator. The discovery of Dark Energy further proves the Universe is not static, is not closed, is not "flat", and is not cyclical. It proves the Universe is "Open". It means the Universe was absolutely Created by a pre-existing eternal reality who consciously made the decision to Create.
The more we've explored the nearby Milky Way Galaxy the more we've come to realize how common water is, yet nevertheless, "Earth-like" planets are ridiculously rare. We still haven't' found another planet capable of supporting most life forms that thrive on Earth, except maybe extremophiles that live in hydrothermal vents.
Well even though it seems like that but space exploration is extremely important for our future generations. Like if you study more after billions of year the Sun will face the giant phase and in this condition The Star becomes big in size. Due to this there will be a time when Sun will be extremely near Earth and Earth will become a hellish place. Eventually Sun will swallow the Earth one day and the future generation will suffer death due to this. We need to find a planet similar to Earth which we can terraform so that people can go and live there. The giant phase will happen around 5 billion years from now so the time is very less to search a suitable planet, Terraform it and settle a good amount of people there. There are many more things why it is necessary. It is not just for fun or something but it is something very important to do. We shouldn't waste our time on such stupid debates and support the scientists for what they are doing otherwise the human race which we are preserving from long time will become like Dinosaurs. I know you are against it but think logically. The explanation I gave here isn't that much to satisfy you I guess so research more if you could or don't ask such questions if you don't know the reason. I'm sorry if this came off rude to you.
Well if it belongs to religion then I won't say anything but according to science scientists have discovered that earth will be swallowed by Sun after 5 billion years. You can do research work also. Yes Bible is also telling the truth that people will be living till the very last day because there is no other planer as comfortable as Earth discovered yet now so yeah it will be utilized till the very last day but what about after the very last day? Because nothing stays forever and so is Earth. I'm telling from the side of logic and science. It's up-to you if you want to believe it or not. But it is 100% true that Earth won't be there after 5 billion years.
@sage2021 I'm only saying from science and logic. Not from emotions. If only for our saddness we will let the world destroy then think of the future generation who will face that hellish side of the Giant phase. It is just totally selfish. If you don't want Human race to continue then blast a big bomb now and destroy the Earth now itself. Destroy it now only buy don't let the future generation suffer due to us. Whatever happens to them is our responsibility. Days will seem long if you see them that way. But if you see from positive eyes then it becomes shorter. How can we even think of letting the Human race ruined for the satisfaction of our saddness? Is it the fault of the future generation that we are depressed now? Why to give them the punishment of our deeds? Don't they deserve chance of life? World is not covered by saddness. It's just our eyes which have the black glasses which makes everything dark. Remove those glasses and come to reality. Trust me you will see the real glory of life.
By "the government" are you referring to the USA specifically, or irrespective of nation involved?
The reason I ask is because ever since the Obama administration, NASA hasn't been particularly active or useful in this regard, and more of a money pit. The corporate-run ventures have made much bigger strides ever since. Obviously governments are going to be behind the funding of deploying satellites for both military and civilian use, but huge chunks of US funding for space is squandered and/or given to the Russians to compensate for using their facilities and rockets. Outside of the USA though, space exploration is pretty much entirely a government pursuit, and exceptions are companies that are more or less government fronts.
I think space exploration is important. It's not the most important issue by a long shot, but it's also much more valuable than a lot of stupid crap that gets funded, like multi-million dollar studies on Brazilian duck penises and bailouts for perpetually unprofitable businesses and services.
Screw Mars. We need to kill Pooh. The real life equivalent of Far Cry 7 should be destroying the CCP utterly. And the sequel is liberating Australia. No one has $675,000 lying around in case you're cited for eating fried chicken. F*k that. And then liberate Venezuela and Cuba, with China gone.
With those demons dead, the balless in Congress and the White House will then have to answer to the Constitution they have trampled for so long. Their every crime against the republic announced on loudspeaker. Their useful idiots mowed down like blades of grass. BLM made to answer for every shop it's ever burned, by burning at the stake itself. Shop owners given the option to light the fire themselves! Biden for the Bronze Bull!
I'll make one exception on the space travel thing: Launch Obama directly into the sun! It's not about the money here. It's about the message. Communism must die in agony. It must meet the God it denies, head-on.
Won't see them again, not even on the 4th of July.
Under current conditions, humanity shouldn't even be allowed to venture into space. We are driven by greed, corruption, selfishness and murder. Until we get our act together, until humanity changes it's way of living, Space should be closed to us. That is my personal opinion and I firmly stand by it.
What for? Do we really have the money or resources to take care of problems here on Earth, much less spend it to go into space? How is that going to help us? If we were, by some astronomical miracle, able to colonize another planet we would just trash that one too.
I think it is important to have some tax pay dollars go into space exploration. But not just for the sake of exploring, but for actually finding solutions to problems we face. We know we can find ways to mine the asteroid belt. We know we may need to find places to live off-planet in the coming decades. We know there are certain experiments we can only conduct in space. We know there are an endless list of things that have yet to learn about the universe. And to have such knowledge privatized by one business simply is not being very smart. Besides the fact other nations are going to continue to make strides. China has already proven quantum teleportation by using satellites in orbit.
We can't continue to cede ground this way.
I am so tired of these high prices we now have to pay for food, gasoline, electricity, etc. We could put all of that money they spend on space back into Americans wallets. What good does exploring space do for us other than piss away our very much needed money we need now. I think that the excitement is for all of the employees working on space projects as they love their work. It does nothing for the average American! ☮️🇺🇸
Yes I think it’s important to have, but exploration of space is in a sense used for militarization and classified military operations whether the use of Spy satellites, vehicles such as the X-37B or any other classified space vehicle operations. Space exploration benefits three types of categories, Commercial, Private, Military sectors.
I think having What bezos and branson have created in terms of private/commercial space travel is amazing.
But when it comes to Elon musk and space X/NASA it’s a whole other level…. The amount of classified payloads they have launched are a bit scary, just wonder what kind of tech they are launching and using to benefit these sectors.
It's good that we're doing it but they're going about it the wrong way and, in the meantime, there's still a shitload of problems right here on Earth that need to be dealt with more than the affairs of space.
As the lyrics to one song say,
We're spending millions to learn to speak porpoise
But human loneliness is still a deafening noise!
We're still using fuel for propulsion when we've had mag-lev technology since the `50's! It'd be EXTREMELY less expensive AND time consuming to use that instead of fuel burning rockets that have a limit of how far they can go and how long they can last. With mag-lev vehicles, they can be used over and over again and probably forever! They don't burn fuel, maybe some sort of on-board-created electricity of some sort and, whereas it takes a rocket 3 or 4 days to get us to the moon, from what I'm told, mag-lev can get us there in about 45:00!! Just think of all the millions, if not billions of dollars being used for each rocket shot! All the metal, time and fuel used for this when you could just build something about the size of a car or bus, that you can re-use numerous times, as opposed to using a HUGE rocket just ONCE!
If they WANT to stick with rockets, they could at least use water as fuel! We know how to not only burn water as fuel to run an engine or even as a blow torch to cut metal but, it's safe to the touch AND the run-off is steam which can be collected and put back into the "fuel" tanks to reuse again and again! Just think of the billions of dollars that could be saved and used for things like feeding the starving and housing the homeless!
It sure would! If only the government would allow us to have them!! But, oil is the huge money maker and people who make shitloads of money don't like it when it's being threatened! They killed the guy that invented the water engine right after he sold the idea to them!
https://youtu.be/gIAZFU2rAQE
There ARE other videos of this on YT if you care to look them up.
Well, it DOES help. Without it, we wouldn't have plastic and some other things it's made out of but, to say that's the ONLY thing that'll run your car is insane!!
It's a matter of history that Republicans complain about NASA when out of power saying money could be better spent on home problems.
Then when in power they spend money on two things, war and tax cuts for the wealthy.
NASA, space exploration and science in general provide massive r. o. i in the long term. They also account for a tiny tiny miniscule fraction of the budget.
Anyone complaining about them does so because they are anti science, not a sudden desire for fiscal responsibility or a need to solve domestic issues.
It's anti-science. Trump even halved the National Weather Service budget.
Multi-billion dollar particle accelerators and space exploration have totally revolutionized our understanding of the Universe we live in. Without these sciences, we wouldn't have nuclear medicine, MRI machines, or modern computers and smart phones. In the future, humans may learn to manipulate the Higgs Field to create a warp drive or a quantum teleportation device. Who knows?
Mining asteroids and harvesting energy from space will eventually become a worth-while endeavor. Just one of the bigger asteroids, Psyche 16 I think, has more resources on its surface than a hundred years accumulated wealth of the entire world economy combined. It would be a perfect staging point for building space-based energy collection systems for a space-based future civilization.
Oh for sure. I mean there is a lot of pointless stuff that gets funded in any area of projects this one is not immune to that. But this has funded many projects that has helped us on a whole to making stuff that without that funding we wouldn't have today and there is plenty of stuff we use down here on earth thanks to it.
Any kind of science is just 100% worth funding because inventions that come from such, can always help us out in way's we didn't even know of.
No. I think the government should dedicate its money to providing better mental health care for adults and children. As well as actually putting money into the hoods to fix them up and offer cool programs to students like they do in the suburbs.
Good for several reasons:
1. Several technological advances have come from space exploration. The cellphone and Internet are two big ones. And did you know that WD-40 was originally invented to keep ice off rockets on the launch pad?
2. Sooner or later, we humans are going to have to venture into space because our planet will no longer be able to support human life.
3. Humans have an instinctive desire to explore the unknown.
As you probably know, at SOME POINT, the human race is going to abandon this small planet and move into Galactic Space. Whether you agree or not, Star Trek, or some form of that life is going to become a reality, for the human race.
The Human Race cannot stay here forever if it is to survive. I only wish, I could be alive to see it.
Thank you for the opportunity to answer. I really enjoy this kind of discussion.
I'm not against it, but I think there are better and more deserving things to spend the money on down here on earth.
The reason we need to invest in Space Exploration is that. Earth is the only planet right now, that we inhabit.
Let's face it, Earth is facing serious environmental disasters, the way we choose to live here is threatening our planet's survival, we could possibly face what the Dinosaurs suffered 65 million years ago. So unless we find another planet to survive on, and soon, we may be extinct ourselves. That should be reason enough.
Yet alone, Why shouldn't we explore what lies out there in space, other planets, perhaps extraterrestrial beings, that we could learn from, band together to form a United Universe to stand against any evil beings that are bent on destruction. Perhaps Space travelling could become a new way to vacation. The benefits are limitless.
Just children playing with toys, boasting how much money they had!
Had because it comes from the tax payers pockets, and straight onto something that may be a waste of time!
Yet if I had the money, I would spend money randomly, the government are not the richest people, Saudi Arabia house is worth $1.4 trillion!
So where does tax payer money actually go?
Interstellar exploration is equally as smart as building a fire escape.
